I think the narator of the song is lonely and down on his luck. He feels like an outsider, I think, "but I want to wait inside of the store where they let me play the organ" For me at least, I always hate waiting for rides inside buildings, because it feels like everyone there is watching you and wondering what the hell your still doing their. He wants to go in, because its warmer there, or cooler, or just a nicer place to wait than out on the curb alone; but he doesn't want to feel like he doesnt belong. The reference to the wooden chair is a little harder to understand... But I think it might be reffering to that same feeling of bein down on your luck and left out of the world. A wooden chair is probably the most uncomfortable kind of chair there is, and to be sitting alone in a room in a wooden chair, stairing down the stairs is a pretty lonely place to be. I think he bought the organ because he thought it would make him feel cool and happy, after all, whats cooler than a professional musician? But it didnt work out because he ended up out on the curb, waiting alone for his ride because now he doesn't have a car to take himself home. Thus, he ended up making himself feel like an outsider after all. A viscous circle, as it were.
