| This is, without a doubt, pearl jam's best song. and i'm a fan. Personally, Ten is the best album to ever be released (no pun intended), but Vs. is second best but still special. This song is kinda like their 'stairway' (an epic, dramatic, emotional rock masterpiece), yet it is very anti-rock. It's the antithesis of what a grunge newb or grunge hater would expect-it's sparse and quiet. Featuring only keyboards and organs instead of guitars (they'res bass), and having one of Vedder's crowning vocal moments (which is saying something.....), it is nonetheless brilliant. The song is a story of a relationship on the edge-either the couple could break up like that, or the person who eddie has a point of view of could work really hard and save it. Just reading these lyrics isn't enough to imagine the incredible atmosphere of the song-for all looking at this song with a slight predjudice against grunge, YOU NEED TO HEAR THE SECOND BLOCK OF LYRICS UP THERE. more than that, the keyboards that play after the first chorus are incredibly somber and catchy...and the lyrics...christ, what more can be said. the only concievable problem could be that it really is a bit anticlimactic. BUT WHO CARES WHEN IT'S THIS GOOD? all in all, it should be the most treasured song in the PJ library. | |
