I have been listening to this song pretty much non-stop since I heard it on the radio. At first I was really frustrated since I didn't know what the song was called since 'Munich' was not part of the lyrics. Anyway, the thing is, I don't believe that this song has anything to do with the events of Germany, however, that is my own opinion, and isn't that part of the beauty of music (different interpretations)? To me, this song has to do with two shy people who really care about one another, and one of them realizes that if anything is to happen, he has to force himself to do stuff. This is my interpretation anyway, and thats why I love this song so much.

i think this song has to be referring to the genocide of the Nazis. even the tone of this song is a little creepy and scewed, like something's not quite right. if the band titled the song 'munich' for no reason, it still fits perfectly.

Feelings and inadequecies make people the easiest things to break when handled wrongly by certain people.

These lyrics are so vague, the song could be about anything. It could literally be about Munich. It could be about an abusive relationship (physically or emotionally or whatever). It could be about masturbation. ("With one hand, you calm me...")

I think that this song is talking about breaking up. "It breaks when you don't force it." That normally doesn't make sense but if you don't force, or work, a relationship, then the relationship falls away. I don't know if it's about Munich. Munich isn't the city with a troubled past in Germany--that's Berlin. As for the athletes, I also think of the human body. You have to force it to work. But I also think it's about control and relationships, especially hierarchies. Parents and children, very Confuscious-style and strict. And if you're a shocking person, then you damage fragile relationships.
