I think this song means that someone is trying to be something that there not. 'I took their smiles and I made them mine I sold my soul just to hide the light And now I see what I really am A thief, a whore, and a liar' The person that there in love with is in love with the person that there pretending to be (little bit confusing). So the person that's pretending to be someone that there not, knows that they can't get close to the person that they love. 'I run to you (far away from this land) Call out your name (giving up, giving in) I see you there (still you are) Farther away' The person that's pretending to be someone that there not, feels like she's growing apart from the person that she loves. I'm sorry if this is a bit confusing to understand and i know that the meaning of the song could be completely different but this is what i think the song means.

Just because they're not a Christian band doesn't mean they can't write Christian-esque songs. I think this song represents a great need for God. :)

There are values within you when you are born. Individualistic qualities that hold onto so tight that nobody can take away from you. But you can let them go. Sometimes the bitter world takes you for a ride and you find yourself taking exits without thinking, without feeling. And then you find out how far you've come, but what is around you is a world that you never wanted to be a part of. My favorite line: i've woken now to find myself in the shadows of a lie i've created I can relate so much. To shed your skin when you've realized the mistakes you were making and how you let yourself drift off (and it took someone else to help me through this, someone bigger then life--thank you!) But when you awaken, it is such an awesome feeling! It is suicide that happens frequenlty in these individuals. And some just simply endure. But this person is choosing to change. To completely derail and get back to that place that they feel a part of. Usually it's somewhere from their past. Personally I so want to be successful and a star, but I'm glad that I'm here just working things out now so hopefully if it does happen I can realize what direction I want to go in without letting myself be lost.

This song resembles my lfie in gerneral right now. It is saying that they do not like the person that they are and that they would rather be anywhere than in their shoes. They are trying to become someone that they do not know...but know they need to be. They are discovering themselves.

I do think that this song is definetly about someone she loves, but I don't think that it's about someone who has passed. The second verse is too sinister. "I'm numb to you, numb and deaf and blind, you give me all but the reason why."

It almost seems like the person she loves keeps going farther away even when she runs to the person....& feels like she's farther away from herself...who she really is. That's just what I think & feel when I listen to this song...I love it, one of my favorites right now.

Is it just me, or do the drums in the beginning of the song sound a lot like the drums in Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness"?

i love this song, it has to be my fave besides breathe no more...just gotta make a correction, it's not "run away from this land" its "run away from this hell." ya..btw great site....to all evanescence fans YOU ROCK...i love amy's voice it is so amazing...my favortie thing to do when i need to unwind is turn up one of her songs and jsut blast it...and not only is her voice amazing but the band is great too....oh and to me this song is about someone who loves someone but cant have them..perhaps she/he is dead or perhaps just doesnt return the love...either way the narrarator of this song feels cheap and sleazy "a theif, a whore and a liar" ya so thats my take..may not be rite but oh well peace!

To me this song is about someone who wants to be rich and famous and powerful, but she does some pretty bad things to get to that spot, eg. I took their smiles and I made them mine I sold my soul just to hide the light And now I see what I really am A thief, a whore, and a liar I think that she realizes that she is turning unice (is that a word?) and superficial and notices her loved one/s drifting away because thats where she pushed them. Thats just what it meant to me. Evanescence kicks ass!

What i think this song is trying to say is this. She feels traped in a world that she no longer wants any part of. One that causes her great pain and sorrow. One that she wishes she could escape. Yet she reaches out for the man she loves wishing he would pull her in. Give her something to look foward to. Something that takes away the pain. A place where she can put it so she can move on. She is releaseing her feelings and letting them go. Telling her story and how badly hurt she has been. She knows her feelings yet she lies to herself saying she is alright. That the world she is in is fine. Yet it is not. So she wants to change it... and in that change she has to find just one person who will believe in her enough to love her and help hr make that change.

Did no one notice the typo in lyrics? It's "I've woken now to find myself/In the shadows of all I have created" (instead of "a lie I've"). Also, it's "Lost in a dying world I reach for something more/I have grown so weary of this lie I live" (instead of "warm" and "life"). Sorry, I know I'm nitpicking, but it urks the hell out of me =). Thanks for letting me rant, lol. I don't mean to offend anyone by sounding evil-bitchy =D. To me, the song's about someone who's lied about who they really are and is now trapped in their lie. They've lied about who they are for so long, they feel like nothing they do is important. They want to be saved from their lies, but they're afraid of what the person they love might think of their true self. They try to save themself from the lies, and can't remember who they really are. Grr, I confused myself on that one...

This song is so meaningful to me. Its how I felt towards God two years ago when my cousin Chris died from cocaine. I felt that God had abandoned me and that I had no love. I even feel that sometimes when shit happens to me but I know he never turns on me its just life, it sux but hey Im not the only person that has problems. My favorite part of the song is when Amy sings "I reach for you but feel only air at night, NOT YOU, NOT LOVE, JUST NOTHING!" she does it with such emotion.

Wrong again, Morgan. Amy IS Christian, but she has stated several times that Evanescence are not a Christian band. None of you can state that this song IS something. It has a different meaning to everyone, as music should. Only Amy, Ben, David, and people associated with the three of them really know what it was written about. This is why you say "I think" or "In my opinion" in front of whatever statement you make =)

AliceUpbringing: The lyrics you mentioned are part of the live version, the revised version. When this was posted, the original version of the song was still the only one in circulation. So the lyrics are correct, it's simply two different versions of the song.

yeah evanescence kicks so much ass live. i think another part of 'farther away' with such emotion is 'a theif a whore aliar'. i think this is like an after-effect of losing someone physically. just so much grief.all of it. 'i took their smiles and made them mine.i sold my soul just to hide the light' it's all anger about who they've become after losing someone.

Okay...I love this song....I have listened to it at least 200 times...I think it's about the singer being in love with someone, but she did something to make him hate her, and now she hates herself. So she tries to get him to forgive her, but everytime she tries to get close enough to apologise, he seems farther away, and she feels like she can't breathe without him, but he still keeps getting farther away.

For me this is about losing someone, either physically through death or relationship wise, by breaking up with them or whatever. You want them back so bad and youre thrown into this darkness without them. "I see you there, farther away" you still see them but they're not with you. In m opinion (which you can either take it or leave it) the best line is "I reach but i feel only air at night, not you, not love, just nothing" About what oyu lose when you lose someone. What you feel, the dark.

cailin, your lyrics are wrong, benni's are right. Evanescence have never been a Christian band-and they've all stated it. Some of their members and ex-members have been and are in Christian bands, and Tourniquet is a cover of a Christian song-but that's it. The song's about working hard and deceiving people to get to a certain goal, only to realise what horrible things you've done and the terrible person you've become, and wanting to be free of it.
