| well tb definately ruined the greatness of this song by saying hardcore. Great job, dick. :D But yeah, I think it means that we're sitting here trying to imprint ourselves into the earth, knowing fullwell that we'll eventually destroy ourselves and leave little trace; like the egyptians | |

| The song starts off questioning the "right to the throne" which "we", the humans, take for ourselves. The author does not exclude himself from this criticism, because he himself "want[s] it all". Then, the next stanca seems to be a description of evolution - the picture of the river running into the sea fits quite nicely: evolution is an ongoing stream of creatures and species who slowly mutate, die out or become. The "fast" standing earth builds a strong contrast to all this dynamic movement. This is really a relativation of man's position in nature. The third stanca is where things become a bit fuzzy, I think. The "lonliness" is a very important part of the song - it corresponds to the "silence" and the "untouched spring" mentioned in the refrain. Men are said to be wandering "alone through the years" and maybe the author points to the strength every human pretends to have - nobody likes to "show his wounds", i.e. to reveal his weakness. Still, the refrain cries for the listener to read "what is written in the soul", to "understand" the authors inner conflict, his "burdens", but without getting "near": the author is himself not able to show his weakness, he is also human. There is the wish to be "two steps ahead" - even more than just in the future, but really far ahead, leaving all the worldly pain behind. Death is not really seen in a negative way here - rather the time before death, because his body, the material part of his life, "will be bent from the burdens", so maybe there is even a positive view to death and a wish for what will be afterwards. | |

| "Anders seems to hav changed his lyrical style...the early albums he goes on about quite mythichal stuf...or it seems that way..and uses weird words...whereas on the more recent albums its been more about the narrator...the word i" Up until this album, Anders didn't write anything because like Lacerate said, he didn't know English, so he had Niklas Sundin (Dark Tranquillity guitarist/In Flames artist) do the early lyrics. He still had a say in content though. 1 | |

| I think this song is ridiculing the fact that humans think that they are so bad ass but when it gets down to it we arn't anything compared to time | |

| I think the first part deals with early humans (and in away modern humans too) coming to grips with their insignifigance and the their inability to fully understand the world around them. From there it moves to humans inability to understand each other. We all want to reach out to one another, but this want is tempered by an anxiety and fear. We are afraid that other will see us for what we are if we let them near, so we hide our true selves from one another. This conflict is becoming too much to bear, and finally result in a cry for help. He is afraid to tell you how he feels, so he begs you to try and intuitively read what is written in his mind without him telling you. Please understand me. Then, he backs it up and revals how this is a conflict that we all have to deal with. We all have to read the silence of others in order to understand how they feel and interact with them on a day to day basis. But, then he brings the focus of the song back into the individual. Nobody is understanding, the internal conflict is becoming too great, and a chasm is opening. Because of the stain there is an earthquake in his mind. If only the impossible was possible. | |

| just a thought..a possible reason why anders lyrics are so "fuzzy" and dont make perfect sense on the first albums is because it was all translated..it even says translated in colony..i think he was still learning to speak english | |
