Artist – Incubus
Title - Just A Phase
Notes -
i. The popped notes in the second bar of the verse bass figure are played by using
a Stu Hamm-style ‘flamenco sweep’. This is a simple technique where a note is
slapped and two strings are consecutively popped by rotating the wrist. Dirk can be
seen to perform this on the Incubus ‘Morning View Sessions’ DVD.
ii. The fill in the second verse replaces the fourth bar of the verse bass figure
and is played when Brandon sings the line ".. and the Jesus of our age.”
Standard Tuning

| this has to be one of my favorite songs on morning view, for various reasons. the lyrics are so well put in such a twisted way, that would be hard for someone to transcribe, but incubus has done it once again. "call it women's intuition, but i think i'm on to something here temporaryism has been the black plague and the jesus of our age... " -- is my favorite line of the whole song, (besides the beautifully long "phase" passages that run through the song). he is so sensitive in many ways, and it is so attractive for a male to be that sensitive. his outlook on the world is original, and ideal for everyone. whether you are a dog, woman or man - how can you not be attracted to this force, that is known as brandon. he just gives so much respect to women, and i love being respected. "even though you're singing and thinking how well you've got it made" - that line sticks out as well. whenever i sing along to that part, i picture others singing along to that particular part, thinking they've got it made, and not understanding the song at all. (even though that may not have ever happened). i know that is not the meaning of the song, but that line is like a tribute, to other people who are singing other songs, thinking they are so great. britney spears is the first person who comes to mind - and i am sorry if anyone likes her, i am not here to offend, i am just stating my personal opinion. i love this song, and i love the vocal, and instrument mesh. it is a mellow song, that turns into a burst of emotion towards the end - and i think it is a damn good song. | |

| "temporaryism has been black plague and the jesus of our age" means that although temporaryism (think pop. culture) has taken over and is bad (like the black plague did), people think of it as "Jesus" or the best thing around. | |

| many people compare this song to a relationship (my best friend for example)... but i think the temporaryism is directed at phases in music....incubus is one of the only good bands out there right now..though they have a dj, i separate them from shitty rap/rock groups today...i'm sure just like all of us, incubus is sick of the empty pop culuture that has taken over (m)tv...and i think brandon may be hoping that good music will make a return ...the whole black plague/jesus thing-the fact that we want a new brittney spears every second is a black plague upon our satisfaction.. and people worship celebritys as if they were messiahs..ok,ill stop...sorry this was long and "opinionated".. | |

| I know that what you all are saying is true, but sometimes when I listen to it, I think of my totally huge crush on Brandon and other blokes: that it's just a phase and soon it will be over cos it will never come into fruition. | |

| the bottled up fizzy water is another significant point. when you shake up a carbonated beverage, the drink loses its carbonation more quickly. at least, that's what i thought of when i heard this song. and yes, i agree with most everyone else. i don't think it is specifically about a romantic relationship or specifically about a relationship with a friend, but more of an overall statement that certain things are subject to change. | |
