BAND: Incubus
SONG: Hilikus
TABLATURE: Bass
TABBED BY: James Trujillo (jtbass3@aol.com)
----------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first time I have ever tabbed anything before,
so please bare with me if it seems a little confusing. The
rythym for the song is hard to tab, but you should get the
idea if you have the cd. The bassist for Incubus has a
5-string, but I tabbed this for a 4-string bass.
key:
bend up (^)
slide up ()
slide down (/)
hammer-on (>)
Intro
G---------5^-----------------------------------------------
D-----5-7-----7-5-7---77-----------------------------------
A--------------------------5-----------12----12-----------
E-----------------------------5----5/----------------------
This part is kinda tricky. Dirk plays 3 hammer-ons back-to-back
in a set of 4.
G----------------------------------------------------------
D-----5>7-5>7-5>7----5>7-5>7-5>7----5>7-5>7-5>7------------
A----------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------
D-----5>7-5>7-5>7----7----------------------
A--------------------------7---------------
E-------------------------------------------
Verse (play 3x)
G-------------4------------------12-------12---------------
D--------5>7-----7-5-7-----11>12----12-11----11-----------
A----------------------------------------------------------
E-----5-----------------5----------------------------------
G-------------4----------7--8--7--8---------------
D--------5>7-----7-5-7---7--8--7--8---------------
A------------------------5--6--5--6---------------
E-----5-------------------------------------------
PreChorus
G----------------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------
A------------------3---3-3-3-------------3-3---------------
E-----5--5---5-5---------------5-5---5---------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------
D-----04-5-6-----------------------------------------------
A-----------------------3-3--------------------------------
E--------------5-5--5---------02-3-4-----------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------5/-10---10-10-10-10-10-----------------
A---------------3-3----------------------------------------
E-----5-5---5----------------------------------------------
Chorus
G----------------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------
A---------------3-3----------------3-3---------------------
E-----5-5---5------------5-5---5---------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------
A---------------3-3----------------3-3--3--3--3-3----------
E-----5-5---5------------5-5---5---------------------------
This part is where they do a little break in-between the verse.
It's just the same as the original verse except with the break.
Verse (play 1x)
After you play the verse 1x, then it goes directly to the second
half of the original verse. If you listen to the cd, you'll know
what I mean.
2nd half of verse
G--------------12-------12--------------4------------------
D--------11>12----12-11----11-----5>7-----7-5-7-----------
A----------------------------------------------------------
E-----5-------------------------5--------------------------
G-----7--8--7--8-------------------------------------------
D-----7--8--7--8-------------------------------------------
A-----5--6--5--6-------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------
Then after you play the 2nd half of the verse, you follow the
order of parts listed below. Then the song basically goes in
order the rest of the way after that. Except for the intro part
which they use as a bridge for the guitar solo and a couple
other different parts the bassist add's during the solo.
Verse (play 1x)
PreChorus (play 1x)
Chorus (play 2x)
Bridge

G----------------------------------------------------------
D---------------------------------5/-10---10-10-10-10-10---
A----------3-3---------------3-3---------------------------
E-----5-5-------02-3-4--5-5--------------------------------
This part comes right after the guitar solo and he plays the
same thing until the next chorus.
DJ solo (play 4x)
G-------------------------------------4--------------------
D---------------------------------4>5---5-4----------------
A----------3-3---------------3-3------------3--------------
E-----5-5-------02-3-4--5-5--------------------------------
PreChorus 1x
Chorus 1x
The next two parts are modified for the ending just to kinda
build it up a little.
Modified PreChorus (play 4x)
G----------------------------------------------------------

A----------3-3---------------------------------------------
E-----5-5--------------------------------------------------
Modified Chorus (play 4x)
G----------------------------------------------------------

E-----5-5---5----------------------------------------------
The ending of this song is the same as the bridge to the guitar
solo and the intro.
End
G---------5^-----------------------------------------------
D-----5-7-----7-5-7---77-----------------------------------
A--------------------------5-------------------------------
E-------------------------------5--------------------------

| They made this song when they were younger, like 18ish. What do 18 year old surfers do? Smoke the Ganj! This is one of a few songs in the Incubus library that are about drugs. I don't think many isongs have anything to do with drugs on aclotm tho. That CD is much more politicaly charged. A crow left of the murder is a play on words for "left wing" which is the anti-war party in the U.S. 1 2 Next | |

| Hehe yeah I noticed they subtly phase in the words "high like us" towards the end when they chant Hilikus...very clever stuff! See, even us straight-edge people who'd never touch drugs can understand it ^_^ | |

| "High like us"; makes a lot of sense, unlike this song. Bring back the Incubus of old and all will be forgiven. Those dreads were fantastic. | |

| For a long time, I was a straightedge. And during that time, I had no idea what the hell a hilikus was. And there then came a time in which I rocked the ganja for the very first time. After my third hit, I looked at my friend and gasped... "Oh my god." "what?..." "Hilikus... high-like-us...!... HOLY FUCKING SHIT." The rest is history. | |

| i just got enjoy incubus about a week or 2 ago, and the first time i actually listened to this song i knew what he was saying. i was hoping i could be the first to point it out, but it looks like im about 2 and a half years behind. im not sure but i dont think anyone was referring to them as stupid stoners just because they said that their songs are mostly about drugs. none of their songs say "DRUGS ARE GOOD! I DONT KNOW WhAT IM TALKING ABOUT CUZ IT FRIED MY HEAD HUR HUR HURRR" and im sure no one interprets their songs that way. after listening to aclotm when it first came out, i noticed how it was vastly different from their older stuff, and i didnt like it all that much until i got high one day and listened to it. i heard it totally differently than i did sober. i finally came to the conclusion that since they were no doubt high when they wrote and recorded the songs, you would have to be high to hear the songs the way they heard them when they wrote them. in other words, you got to be high like us(them) to understand it. if you dont understand what im saying, go smoke a few bowls then think about it. its like some sort of secret language. hur hur druggggs... good thing i quit... | |
