| obstacle 2, i agree with about half the stuff you're saying, but disagree with most notably the last 2 lines of the song. the way i see it is the sames as bamargero's interpretation ^ | |

| I've been thinking about this song a lot lately. i think it's about 2 individuals who are attracted to the subtleties(sp?) of the other's personality. "she says brief things her loves a pony" she has a cutesy, sort of naive attitude about life and shows her love in that obvious lovey dovey kind of way "my love's subliminal" his love is harder to detect, but its there, sort of "between the lines" the two of them connect in such a way that they don't need to say much to know how the other feels, hence: "it's like learning a new language, helps me catch up on my mind" i'd love to know what anyone else thinks. | |

| I don't know about that, seeing as Interpol is from New York. I agree with bamargero's take. The song didn't make much sense to me until looking at it in that light. | |

| Leif Erikson was infact an actor who was married to Frances Farmer. The song is about Frances Farmer I'd safely reckon, with the aforementioned icebox line a reference to one of the "treatments" she received which had her submerged in a tank of ice cold water for hours on end. Sorry to sound so matter of fact, but I'm fairly certain that would be it, not that it really matters what the song means to anyone but yourself. | |

| Bravo to ObstacleTwo. I completely agree with you and you did a good job describing it. Few things to help you out that you were confused on- "Kid gloves" are leather working gloves made from baby goat skin. The phrase means, "hold on to this gently". "my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves" means that his emtions should be treated gentle because he's sensitive. The other one was, "It’s like learning a new a language, Helps me catch up on my mime". When you try talking to someone who doesn't speak english you use hand gestures and signals (mime) to express what you're trying to say, so that they'll understand. So I think that the lyric means the opposite of what you said. They don't speak the same language (metaphorically) so he's over acting and expressing himself so that she'll understand where he's coming from. Also- the tone to me is not as romantic as you see it. It's more depressing. "She doesn't know that I left my urge in the icebox" shows no lust for her or sexual appeal. It's more like he's turned off by her. He and she are opposites and not meant to be together, it's obivious throughout the song. *Leif Erikson was a Canadian explorer. I have no idea what that has to do with the song.......anyone esle know? | |

| I heard Lief Erikson was also a really crazy painter, but that's all I've heard, and that Paul B quote pretty much shoots down that idea. I apparently disagree with most of you, though. I see the song as stoic, above sex and love and the game of flirting that just leads to sex. It's like, the speaker is so cold and differenm how can ge expect someone to feel quite the same? The speaker is challenging her to try and catch his imagination, She swears I’m just prey to the female, Well then hook me up and throw me, baby cakes, cuz I like to get hooked. I see that as sarcastic. Being quiet and reservedis sometimes missinterpreted by stupid flirts as sensitivity, so they start to flirt, and it's always awkward from there. I can relate to telling ugly girls who think I'm sweet, "Nope. You are shallow and hungry."" I love Interpol because sex is always secondary to something greater that can not be expressed (fragments of a Hemingway code, or something, I suppose). | |

| i see it more as a couple who's realtionship is all about sex. however, the guy has become attached to the girl emotionally, and wants their relationship to mean something more. but "She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves" and doesn't want any of that. on the rest of it i'm kind of unsure, i think that he reconciled and decided to just let their relationships stay the way it is, even if he wants more, "cuz I like to get hooked." the last lines i interpret as just being a summary, and her love being "a pony" means that she just wants to have sex, her love is totally animal, and she doesn't talk much(she says brief things). but of course, like so many men, he is attached anyway, "my love's subliminal." this is just my interpretation of what is in my opinion the best song on Turn On the Bright Lights and one of the best songs ever | |

| Leif Erikson was a (norwegian) Viking who 'discovered' North America 500 years before Columbus. i have no idea why they named this song after him. | |
