He's screwed up in his past relationships, made total messes out of them. The beginning is sort of like begging for a second chance a "perole". Seems to me that he was a womanizer "I'm subtle like a lion's cage" and this next girl he wants more out of her but at the same time it seems to be going just the same way. The lines where they're dancing just seem obscene, like he's totally going through it once again. "I will bounce you on the lap of silence, We will free up to the beats of science, And girl, you shake it right " I didn't catch the possible drug references until I saw what you all said.

Interpol is one big Joy Division reference in itself. I am not saying that as a bad thing. Joy Division is one of my favorite bands, and I think that Interpol does a great job of creating their own songs, but they are pretty blatantly influenced by JD whether they conciously mean to be or not. Anyway, about the song. The thing I like about Interpol is that their lyrics don't always come right out and say what they mean, but you can just tell in the voice and emotion of the song. I really think that this is about going into a relationship knowing that you will hurt the person, even though you don't want to.

Ahhhhhhhhh! I like kefr617's interpretation of the "subtracting pain by ounces" line the most :) I must applaud that. I never thought of it. Well done.

"I'll subtract pain by ounces" is perhaps the most profanely drug-addicted thing I have ever read/heard. Most of the song makes sense in that context, and where it doesn't are the shades of a sexual relationship that was going on while all of this was going down. I think the story is about someone falling so deep into addiction that he gets in trouble for it. He loses the person he has grown to love (if only that love is not fully blossomed from that sexual relationship that they had) because he let his ways get ahead of him - "give some meanings to the means." He finally realizes what he has been doing is wrong, and instead of trying to rebuild relationships - like he wanted to so desperately at first - he wants to seperate himself away from humanity, and he builds his own personal jail. Or I might be over-reaching a little. ;D

Not the best song on Antics but the best lyrics.

I believe that this song is about alcoholism. The guy in the song is a deadbeat, who has fallen in love with someone, and making excuses to himself as to why he keeps drinking.

Beautiful song...my favorite from Antics... "If things come alive" To me, that sounds like...if a relationship comes to fruition...like he wants a girl and if she agrees to be with him.
