| All the interpretations above are not quite close to what I believe. I have a reasonable and approcable sense of this song lyrically, while the music is just phenominal. In a general sense, the song is about guilt, not romance, homosexuality, or hunger (ham :P). It did take me awhile to realize this, but it becomes verrry obvious when you do. Lets go a little deeper: This guy, john, is in a store and wants to shoplift a laser-pen or something. He talking to someone or even no one, asking him, "stop me from doing this!" In order words, he feels extremely tempted to steal the laserpen, and doesn't have enough self-control over his 'id.' The second stanza is simply that he can't control himself and decides to steal the pen. 'Serve it up, I'll do it" After a long musical interlude, he comes out desperately, "OMG, why can't I control myself?! I am such a fool. "Homespun," if any of your guys have even spent half a minute to look up, means something homemade or produced by one person. This guilt, john feels, is created by himself. Now, he even though he gets his laser-pen, he cannot get over the guilt of commiting the crime. Finnaly, my favorite line is the last. The way the music flows into it and his voice..o...so well polished. It says, even though John didn't get caught stealing that laser-pen, there is always a sense of interal guilt in himself. What music and meaning, I love this song! | |

| I always figured this was something along the lines of the 'unhappy housewife' kinda thing that went on in the '50s (still goes on today, but is occasionally SPOKEN about, plus we have divorce etc, I'm not here for an argument). Any way Will you put my hands away? - Will you stop me from ever doing anything again? Will you be my man - Will you marry me (who DIDN'T get this?) Serve it up don't wait - Wife serving up a dinner for her abusive husband and friends Lets see about this ham. - An additional line to firstly end of the rhyme and also to further the housewife idea ( husband shouting in kitchen at wife over ham not being ready. Home spun desperation's knowing Inside your cover's always blown -Putting on a happy face, knowing there is no way out (homespun desperation) I think that line on the lyrics are wrong I THINK that it's Home spun desperation Inside your cover is always blown At any rate, yeh about that idea of a 50's housewife who is abused but can't get out, cause society won't allow it. | |

| He's a chef and need's a hand on a busy night. They get 30 covers in that night and all 30 order the ham. But, distracted, they overcook the ham. "oh what happend?" He knows that he's gonna have to take the blame and shifting it on to the hired help is just not going to cut it. "Home spun desperation's knowing/Inside your cover's always blown" I can't cook and i still love it tho | |

| You just have to hear this when they played it on the Black session in 2002.. The bas and a guitar overlaping at the beginning and paul's voice jumping in with sam's bas drum / cymbal combo... And the drumming just sort of muffles every other sound at the middle of the song, you can hear little except sam pounding those cymbals like it's the end of the world with paul singing so depressively... | |
