Nicely stated BIOhazard, and insightful depication, as always, RainbowDemon. But now time to combine the two. The use of Azazel was a very potent allusion, and greatly contributes to the society of Huxlies aclaimed novel. Notably, Azazel introduced vanity and new impuraties to the world, which John must confront. The rest of the world is consumed by the evils of Azazel, as depicted in the first verse. Ultimatly, John is the only one in this world that retains any piety, any knowlage and belief in God, and thus he is alone, however he feels himself fall into impurety because of the desires this 'new world' arouses in him. He flees London and in solitude offers prayers and self-mortification in exchange for the allieviation of his sins.
