	this song is so awesome... the lyrics have some very powerful images, and the instrumental section in the middle is a masterpiece. as for the meaning, i reckon its mainly about someone who has commited a pretty serious sin, and he has to be cleansed of it in some way, some sort of test of faith. it's about his doubts and fears on the way. in the end, he fails the test "lost the love of heaven above, chose the lust of the earth below" also i agree with Nibber about it relating to the rapture and associated events also, there's a bit a reference to "the rose", which is what paranoid conspiracy theorist - type da vinci code fans call mary magdalene. only a minor theme here but theres a lot of it in maiden's "revelations"

	Oooh Bruce all the way. This song is rad! Seriously though, nothing pisses me off more when someone hears a metal song with the word "God" in it and automatically decides it's Christian-bashing. While none of the guys in Maiden have ever come out and stated their religious beliefs, I get the feeling they're more agnostic than atheist. It's songs like this that make me feel this way.

	This song is a complete masterpeice. Has everything you would expect and more from a classic maiden epic. The instrumental is the best in years with only fear of the dark and affraid to shoot strangers topping it.

	I don't know how anyone who has read the lyrics above could say that this is Bible bashing, unless they are so poorly educated and thick or so anti-metal that they can't/don't wnat to understand it. Iron Maiden have released a number of tracks with a pro-religious theme/content and have derided the false priests and money grabbing scamartists who use religion to enrich themselves. But because they have also released songs with darker and deeper meanings/tones, they are derided based upon uninformed ignorance. I see a very pro-religious theme and meaning in this song. If anyone wants to look further into some of the bands motivations, put Nicko McBrain into Google & read some of the results - the man is a committed Born-Again Christian. Oh - the song kicks ass too, only with Bruce singing it though, and the last guitar solo on the R in R album is a breath of fresh air....brilliant.

	This song is about a man About a man imprisoned by the inquisition and likely being executed. wether the man has sinned or not and is deserving of the punishment (Not that the inquisiton was fair,Just or anything resembling the wishes of Jesus christ, Or anyone was deserving of the punishment) he will recieve is debatable "Lost the love of hevaen above, choose the lust of the earth below" seems to be a indication that he has sinned somewhat. But i think its wrong to take them at face value, with such an un straight forward song. Anyways there are severeal references to the Inquisiton. "Saintly shrouded men" the Inquisitors wore Cloaks, that hid they're faces and beleived that they were doing gods will (Which would make them, In thier own eyes at least, Saintly) "Sillhouettes stand against the sky" Perhaps the shillhouettes of the fires of those burnt at the stake. "One in front with a cross held high"Preists Holding Crosses Usually acompanied Inqusitors.

	I don't believe this song is so musch as bashing of the disciples as it was in showing empathy for them. In the Bible the disciples were in a room, scared. I would be too.
