Man's existence in modern times is accented by meaninglessness and alienation from the true, primordial purpose of life. In addition, many move through this life in cavalier disregard for the qualities of its inexorable brevity, allowing their attention and intents to be (dangerously) diverted by means of leisure and shallow entertainment, from finding that purpose.

Humane is a word invented by beings Who have no clue as to its meaning I've written that into the lyrics for what will hopefully be a song someday, and it was inspired by this song (I'm not sure why, but it just popped into my head after hearing this song one day).

If you ask me the second verse sounds like the rapture.

It's funny, because the verses of this song describe troubling aspects of society and depressing places to be in life, yet it always feels hopeful and uplifting to me. I think something about it suggests that it's describing things that are in the past. All that's behind you; the sun is rising (or setting?) and it's a time of transition. You're leaving it all behind, skating away.

Definite religious overtones, here. Back in the year one... pants undone (metaphorical-apple, literal-naked, shame) Bred for humanity, forced into society, definitely Adam and Eve. Pretty obvious, the song's a contemplation of life, wasted time, sin, spirituality, and God's role in it all in relation to us. The title's significance just became apparent to me now- "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day." - Basically, every day could be your last. Sounds like my car.

sirdon is spot on. This song is about shallowness in society, about forgetting the basic things about life and getting lost in society. People forget who they really want to be, they get caught in meaningless jobs and triviality. "a million generations removed from expectations..." This song, to me, is about realizing that life's really a fragile thing... and that we must seize the day, instead of "being the only person sitting in the audience", and make the most out of each day... striving to be who we really want to be.

nice car... Jethro Tull is definitely underapreciaed for their lurical quality....it's more like poetry (wow, a flue too, even) than rock...

For me, this song is all about perspective. The 'lens' through which we see things as time changes. There's also kind of a theme of grabbing opportunity ("everybody's on the stage, and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience"). It seems to be describing the feeling of your society deteriorating. He's encouraging revolution and change. Anyway, this is one of my favorite Jethro Tull songs. 1
