| I don't really think this song is about a relationship, it seems more of a nostalgic reflection on his past. In the bridge, its almost as if he's looking back on his old hometown, seeing perhaps the next generation living the same life he lived. The line "And someone is calling my name from the back of the restaurant" Connotes a small town type feel, where he may be seeing someone from his past. He misses those days and possibly thinks they were taken for granted (Some things sat by so carelessly) Yet he realizes that he must smile in remembering the good times. | |

| according to an inteview with branden flowers (the lead singer/song writer) its about looking back and smiling and accepting the choices that you made. and even though there were bad and hard times you get through them and eventully can smile again even if the pains still there. its not NOT about a relationship. he was really specific about that. great song great clip he really likes that shade of lipstick and style of eyeliner doesnt he? he's worn it in every clip | |

| I agree with the notion of the speaker giving advice, and looking back upon his life. I think in the first two lines he's giving advice to just anyone-mainly young people in general- and then he gets specific by telling "boys" that one day they'll be men (and they should probably start acting like them) and tells "girls" that life (I feel mainly love) will only make sense with the boy (or the man). He then goes on to say that they should "smile like you mean it", by making smiles precious and smiling when you mean it, and by making smiles feel meaningful. He then goes on about his past memories and talking about his love and watching sunsets on the Eastside and losing track of time, like they were carefree. The next two lines feel as if they have double meanings, as in he's telling the people he's talking to about dreams not being what they used to be, and telling himself at the same time, almost an at moment self realization. He then repeats himself about smiling. The next stanza seems like he has to go because someone is calling his name from the back of a restaurant, and then talking about earlier times , and speaking of someone new being with the person that he was with. To me, its an extremely tragic love song. Not just love of another person, but of times that have passed and he'll never have again. It always makes me want to cry. | |
