I think the song is about looking back at decisions made in the past and trying to accept them even though you might wish you'd chosen differently. "Smile like you mean it" -> he doesn't mean it, what he's thinking about/remembering doesn't make him happy, but he knows he can't change what's happened so he has to make the effort to accept it. While he's trying to come to terms with it he has to put on a front to hide how he feels by smiling like he means it. When he sings "Dreams aren't what they used to be/Some things sat by so carelessly" he's looking back on his youth and thinking about the dreams he used to have and how he misses that idealistic stage. I think the song comes down to him thinking about a particular relationship he had that might have ended badly and now really regrets. "And someone will drive her around/Down the same streets that I did/On the same streets that I did." He knows that he will never get back with her, and that someone else will replace him in her heart, and that is his biggest regret. After he thinks about the girl he repeats to himself "smile like you mean it" as a reminder that he has to accept what has happened and try to move on. I agree with Marno that it is a really sad song about remembering times that are gone forever, and mistakes he might have made that he can never change now.

This song could sooo be suicide or death or even just regret. "smile like you mean it" i think is like a grit you teeth sort of expression, you know just get on with the here and the now

I think its someone looking in retrospect at his past….i think he was in love and they broke up and in the first verse he’s talking to an older person he looks up to about it….maybe he treated the girl badly and this older person is telling him to learn from his mistakes and nip it in the bud while he’s young. He’s remembering all the good times with this girl and he knows that she will find some one else one day – “someone will drive her around down the same streets that I did”. He’s trying to keep a brave face, but inside he’s hurting, he cant truly smile, but he’s putting on a front to act like he’s ok, when he’s clearly not. Its such a melancholic song, but it makes me feel optimistic whenever I hear it. Beautiful music in this one too, its so 80’s.

the more i think about it i think its written from the prespective of an older person looking back on his past and in the 1st verse hes giving advice to a young person, then in the 2nd and 3rd verse its about his memories and the chorus is "smile like you mean it" because some of those memories hurt and the fact at they are in the past and that hes not so young anymore is enough reason to say "smile like you mean it"

This song is so beautiful...it can have multiple meanings: Growing up, and learning the hard way about life, missing the younger part of your life Or maybe you are already grown up and in a depressed mood, but when you think about your past it brings a smile to your face. Overall, this song is amazing, probably tied with All These Things That Ive Done.

FAVORITE PART OF THIS SONG: And someone is calling my name From the back of the restaurant And someone is playing a game In the house that I grew up in And someone will drive her around Down the same streets that I did On the same streets that I did It has to sides of it, the part where someone is calling his name, it means that he is snapped back to reality, back to present day, and someone is calling his name. The rest of that verse is as he is going to the back of the resturant, he is thinking about his past time. I think that is the best part of the song. Overall, great song, one of their best.

According to my Media Studies teacher, it's about suicide. In a way, I can see what she means - the singer killed himself, but still looks at Earth and where he lived etc.
