Ray said in his autobiography that this was about a woman he was dating, but she ended up leaving him because he was a drunken mess and his wife was jealous. It's Ray's goodbye to her. To me it's always sounded like a funeral song though. It has made me cry in the past.

Dave Davies and his brother Ray are masterful musicians. Too bad they're not as fondly remembered as the Beatles and the Stones are.

The lyrics are meant as a break up song, but I can see this work very very well for someone who passed away. I think when he says "you took my life" it's as if his previous love took his breath away. Another great Kinks song!!
