I just saw the video, and i feel like that's exactly what happened with my exboyfriend when my dad decided to move to a different country. I tried to be cold, but I still loved him, it was not his fault... but at the same time we both wanted to meet other people. After two years I moved on, he hasn't. THE FIRE FADES AWAY...I can't deny the fact that I still love him, and I get jelous everytime I see his pictures with other girls and friends 'cause I'm not part of his world anymore. But he keeps writing and telling me that he loves me. The only thing that scares me, is to wake up one day and realize he was the one. CAN YOU HELP ME, CAN YOU LET ME GO AND CAN YOU STILL LOVE ME... This song just put into words what I needed him to know.

This song is such a grower - I love the imagery in the first verse It's all self-explanetory - a long distance realtionship that's just not working out because of the distance. And they're both to blame. They both want to hang on, but it's too hard beacuse they can't see each other.

i'm with those who think this is about the end of of relationship...the way that a long term relationship can end 'not with a bang but with a whimper' and it can take a while for you to admit to yourself or to each other that it's over. her being like and iceberg could be the way she's allowed herself to become withdrawn, static, unchanging. the most interesting parts to me are the two last verses...the 'panic light/holding on' could be the way that a loveaffair flares up again as you realise that it's over, but scared to let go, so you hand on harder that ever. and 'can you let me go/can you still love me' is asking the partner to let go. meaning, how can you still love me when you don't even know me any more, so let me go. great song. don't base too much on the video of this or any song!

The first verse uses the iceberg as a metephor for how she feels inside before meetign the guy or whoever she's singing to. Before she met him, she was as cold inside as an iceberg. The water aroudn her was free and generally (not being frozen and all) warmer. In the second verse, she's met him and she describes their relationship as two becoming one, flowing through each other "like water". (And hence warmer ... this is where "the fire fades away" is derived later on in the song) the rest of the song is about him going away and hence the warmth. "The fire fades away" means he fades away. There realtionship fades away. On a seperate note You're CLOSE ENOUGH to see that you'r on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLd to me, is some kind of oxymoron. Clever ;)

The song is brilliant! and once again SO original. What I love about the song is, it flows, and it flows SO nicely. There are almost two choruses linking into one another, and the song builds up from the "And the fire fades away" line to the "Your the other side of the world to me" line in a very clever way. It takes quite a bit of listening before you can sing along. Fantastic

I also think this song is about the end of a relationship. (And not a long distance one.) I think the feelings have faded and the relationship has died. Now they are just trying to accept that their bond has weakened and the spark is gone.

Its more than just the simple long distance relationship. The first verse is explaining her as a person, where she is right now. She has dreams, plans, and an opportunity. She feels stuck, and wants to be free like the water or other people around her. She has to go, to leave. But she is leaving someone behind. The second verse is the goodbye or the time that she breaks the news. Shes leaving. She doesn't want to loose him, but needs to go, for herself. Then the chorus. The chorus takes a different turn, explaining a different part of the story. That is why it goes into first person. It goes to the future. Or the present and the first part was the past. Whatever. They are very close (You're close enough to see that) not physically maybe, but they have history, they have a connection. But unfortunately it isn't enough. The distance takes over, bringing with it excuses and too much complexity to the relationship and day by day the fire fades away. Then comes the last verse where it goes back to when she is leaving. The panic feeling, holding on for dear life to the other person because you know you may never see them the same way again. The bridge part is the questioning: "Should we keep this going? Can we do it?" All with the felling of doubt like lets try this but I don't think it will work. And then the fire fades. Its the simply complicated story of needing to go foryourself, leaving someone you care about behind witht he promise of return, but loosing them anyway, bit by bit. And beautifully done.

i def dont agree with a long distance relationship because these lyrics are def more deep. long distance relationshop is just .. too simple of a meaning. it dont think it has to do with actually distance. thats too easy. its more of distance of the heart. but i cant tell if hes the one distancing himself or she is distancing herself from him. of course it could be both and shes just sad that its like that now.

She's really worried and unsure of what her heart is telling her to do. He may not be far away but he seems like it. She's considering what will happen....and what would happen if he did leave. How it could ever work. She's sad about the choice she has to make.

I don't think that this song is about a long distance relationship. i just think that "you are the other side of the world" doesn't mean that they are actually on the other side of the world, it just seems like they are. thats how far apart they are now as opposed to how they were in the beginning.
