First time I heard this I got the image of a mother trying to protect her daughter from all the words of hate out in the world, and from, sadly, the truth that the world is a violent place. "enjoy the silence" seems like a plea to her daughter not to grow up and see what it's like out there.

Lacuna Coil's version of this song is better than Depeche Mode's version. I think it's the mixture of male and female voices that make this song so damn beautiful. But well done to Depeche Mode for writing this song :D I think the song is about two lovers holding each other and just appreciating each others presence rather than making small talk. The moral of this song is "Silence is golden" lol

I have always think that this song is about true love, in true love you don't need any words they're just uneccesary, and words can turn things so wrong and confuse you..

Actions speak louder than words... This song speaks loudly the truth amidst its dulcet tones.

I definitely believe it's about intimacy and its natural proclivity toward silence.
