I love the drum beat in this song. The person telling the story is Poor Tom's grandson. Recorded in 1970, it was remixed for Coda, an album of unreleased tracks that came out after John Bonham died. It was intended for Led Zeppelin III, but didn't make the cut. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote this at Bron-y-aur, the cottage in Wales where they wrote most of Led Zeppelin III.

I'm going to guess that the grandson on Tom's knee line, is refering to who the speaker of the song is (yes, I know its not poetry, but it seems aplicable here). This would have been an amazing additition to Led Zeppelin III, i think. Its feel reminds me of Bron-Y-Aur Stomps's, and I would have loved to hear this before or after that song. But going to the song its self. The drum beat is quite entrancing for me, the 16th note pattern played on the snare drum adds to the over vibe of the song, its eaisly in my top 10 Led Zeppelin favorite songs.

I love how the guitar comes in right after the "Poor Tom..." line. I thought Ramthar's comment was interesting. However, I don't exactly understand the lyric about the grandson on Tom's knee. Does anybody know what it means?

Yea, you said it wonderfully hangwire. Lot of not so good songs, but great ones. Like this. This song would have fit Led Zeppelin III amazingly too. I love this song. The drums are awsome, the lyrics are awsome, the guitar is awsome, the vocals are awsome. The very first time I heard it and from now on for some reason if reminds of like... Mississippi.. like Tom Sawyer, maybe because its poor TOM, but I dunno
