Much of Zeppelins work was derived from the Missippi Delta blues. One artist in particular was Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie was a "street preacher" and slide guitar player. He is credited by many including Eric Clapton and Keith Richards as being the finest slide guitar player who ever lived. This song and another, "In My Time of Dying" are derived from Blind Willie's works...including the famous line "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dyin' Bed". Pagey's slide guitar work is also a tribute to Blind Willie. Unfortunately, Page liked to "steal" ideas from early Blues artists without giving them any mentions on the credits.

To me it comes over as Plant singing about how his life is not run through the will of gods or A god. he is responsible for his own decisions and his own life and thats what the line nobody's fault but mine means to me, it is depressing yet he expresses that he is free and knowone else controles his actions.

dwfp99, the lengths of your ignorance seem to know no bounds. If you would actually do a bit of READING, something I'm sure people your age do their best to refrain from, you would qucikly discover that the Zeppelin "stole" quite of bit of their work from early blues musicans. Anne Bredon, Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Blind Willie Johnson, Moby Grape.. and these are irrfutiable FACTS. You only make a fool of yourself to act like Zeppelin is a completely original act. While they were very talented musicians, they like Hendrix, stole and lot of work from others and never credited it to any. Educate yourself.

i find it hard to believe no one has commented on this song yet. the guitar is amazing, especially in the beginning. and it continues to be awsome throughout the whole song, its just a perfect example of an awsome led zeppelin song.

No, I'm a Native American, speaking of Led-Zeppelin, I was wearing a Led Zeppelin T-shirt, and walking down the street when a bunch of 15-year-old-snotnosed-white-boys-wearing-their-hair-long-trying-to-be-sombody-they-can't-and- never-be saw my shirt and asked if I like Led Zeppelin. Me Knowing a lot about them and own all their albums and listen to them everynight just modestly nodded my head because I truly like Led Zeppelin so much I don't always brag about it. Those stupid 15-year-old-snotnosed-white-boys-wearing-their-hair-long-trying-to-be-sombody-they-can't-and- never-be made fun of me becasues they though I was a poser. They are... because they know nothing about my life or jack sqaut about music so they should go back to Europe if the can't respect the Land and It's FAmily.

It's about heroin addiction. But clearly a great song and shows growth from the a band that was already ahead of everyone at the time.

The abrupt instrumental rests, & start/stop syncronisms add a lot of sudden energy and punctuation to this song. As far as lyrical interpretation is concerned, there are a couple of opinions out there. For those subscribing to the theory that Led Zeppelin's strings were pulled by supernatural forces, and as suggested in "Hammer of the Gods," this song represents the point where the band stopped it's flirtations with the supernatural. Personally, I think that's BS. Considering that this was Zep's 7th album, and that Robert Plant was involved in a serious car accident before/during recording, I think it more likely suggests a conscious decision to take another path, grow-up and move away from the decadent rockstar lifestyle. Wonder if that ever happened?

"How to roll the log tonight"? I about rolled like a log when I read that. He says 'How to roll but, not collide.' Though I'm sure it's been said "many times, many ways".
