you guys are crazy, this is just like most rock songs, it doesnt have a true meaning just about a how when a guy sees a hot chick and how he is feeling its not meant to have a deep meaning to it, and blackbird is right about how they got the name

I always felt that Led Zeppelin chose song titles that held meaning within meaning. Even the band's name is a play on words (deliberately misspelled). On "Black Dog" I wondered if the title they chose was a more obscure reference to Sir Winston Churchill (Britain's Prime Minister during WWII) who suffered from bouts of clinical depression. Lord Churchill referred to the dark mood when it came over him as the "Black Dog". Lastly, does anyone know what the time signature of the music is on "Black Dog"? - it is like no other rock song I've ever listened to. I think it is 6/4 or possibly 9/4 time. Help!

word blackbird. the lyrics were not written about the dog that was in the studio...that was only the inspiration for the name. man...i cant believe i said "word" to someone.

The title comes from a black dog that was running around in the studio, but not the lyrics.
