Song: Lightning Crashes
Band: Live
Album: Throwing Copper

One Tonne Turtle bassist (http://onetonneturtle.cjb.net)

I learnt this song from my bass teacher when i first started playing, but i forgot it
and came here to remember it, but Lisa Knappe's tab wasn't how i heard it, and learnt
it. It sounds good, but if you play it like this, it sounds alot better.

h = hammer on (push down on the fret to make the note sound, instead of
strumming)
>= slide UP the string
< = slide DOWN the string

Half the song is acoustic, with only guitar and vocals, but the bass comes
in
just after he sings "The baby down the hall", you can just hear it...

1:57
G:----------
D:----------
A:----------
E:-4-4-<-0--

then really soft... x4

1:58 h
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:-----------2--2--4---------------------------------------------
E:-0--0--2-4---------2---2----4-<--------------------------------

Then it goes back slower, and the drums kick in soon...(bit louder) x4

2:23
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:----------------2---2---4--------------------------------------
E:-0---0---2->-4--------------2---2---2-2-2---2---4-<------------

Now louder with drums, this part sounds cool... x2

3:05 h
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:------------2-2-2--4---------------4-6-4-----------------------
E:-0-0-0-2-4------------2-2-2-2->-6--------6-4-<-----------------

h
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:-------------2-2-2--4-------------4----------------------------
E:-0-0-0--2-4------------2---2->-6--------6-<--------------------

Line before solo...

3:26
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:-------------2-2-2--4-------------4---5-6----------------------
E:-0-0-0--2-4------------2---2->-6-------------------------------

Solo...

3:30 x2
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:----4->-8-<--6-<--4--6--4--------------------------------------
A:-6-------------------------6--4--6-6---------------------------
E:---------------------------------------------------------------

G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:----4->-8-<--6-<--4-4-6--4--------------6-7-6-------8-9->-11---
A:-6-------------------------6--4--6-7--7-------7->-9------------
E:---------------------------------------------------------------

G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:----4->-8-<--6-<--4--6--4--------------------------------------
A:-6-------------------------6--4--6-6---------------------------
E:---------------------------------------------------------------

G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:----4->-8-<--6-<--4-4-6--4--------------6-7-6------------------
A:-6-------------------------6--4--6-7--7-------7->-9-9-9-9-<----
E:---------------------------------------------------------------

Now basically, you play these two lines over and over again until
the end of the song...

4:05 h
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:------------2-2-2--4---------------4-6-4-----------------------
E:-0-0-0-2-4------------2-2-2-2->-6--------6-4-<-----------------

h
G:---------------------------------------------------------------
D:---------------------------------------------------------------
A:-------------2-2-2--4-------------4----------------------------
E:-0-0-0--2-4------------2---2->-6--------6-<--------------------

You have to get all the sliding right, otherwise it doesn't sound
as good. Its a really good bass tune, and they should have
recorded it louder, it's really hard to hear. As always, listen
to the song for tempo, i've tried to give you some idea of tempo
with larger gaps.

Most people miss the most central meaning to this song. Not trying to be arrogant, but it just really jumps out at me. Ed K. is obviously very well versed in the various religious beliefs, and I think this song showcases reincarnation. One spirit "dying" and moving into the closest "birth." I don't get the reference to the sun/son, though. Obviously a reference to Christ, but, how? Suggestions?

The most awesome song ever....ive myself got more than 20 covers of this song...all of 'em sound great....obvs the best being the original version.....the song can most certainly be compared to one, which brings hope..........its talking about Leiws Barbara, Ed Kowalcyzk's high school friend who had been killed by a reckless driver. It is also said the she was NOT the original inspiration of the song... (the song was just dedicated to her)........the original inpiration came after it was written.

this song is easily one of my favorites. it has such an uncanny urgency in the chorus and bridge. this song was the reason i began listening to Live. the lyrics are absolutely mind-blowing.i'm gonna try my best to put them together into a semi-logical whole. the first two lines ("it's easier not to be wise/ and measure these things by your brains"), i think ed is trying to say that things aren't always what they seem. i know thats a huge cliche, but it also shows the ignorance of arrogance, such that we see things, and think we understand them by our own reason, and not necessarily theirs. notice how ed says "i sank into eden with you/ alone in the church by and by." its interesting that he is with someone, but is also alone at the same time. then, he says "i'll read to you here, save your eyes/ you'll need them, your boat is at sea." i think ed is going for a view of true nature here. he's saying that you need focus and awareness to attain it (your true nature). and it's so overwhelming that "you've been swept away" as soon as "your anchor is up". the lead-in to the chorus is odd, such that i don't think "the greatest of teachers" would choose for someone to be "chained to fate". the conclusion

This is a very, very emotional song for all who listen to it. The lyrics are very powerful and meaingful and while they mean what has been said above, this is a song that can be translated into many different things if you think about it and relate them.

this song is so awesome, it's like i could listen to it on repeat forever. Same with most all of Live's songs. This song, for whatever reason, sort of makes me reflect on everything.

i have a live version of this song and ed said it was originally written about living and dying but now he thinks its about rising and falling. its goes out to a friend of theirs who is "undoubtedly, inevitably, totally, absolutely in heaven". i love this song but if u hear it live you get so caught up in the mood of the song and it is just awesome live!
