| He was also addicted to drugs and the rest of the band wanted to put a stop to it. Hence the refrenced to drugs and not just alcohol. | |

| Spot on SouthernMetalHead, the song is about Gary Rossington. Prince Charming - Gary was always popular with the ladies, so history goes! I'm not sure about the Artimus and Collins thing, if so, I never heard it before. | |

| SouthernMetalhead, evidentally YOU dont know your skynyrd history. This song is a true story written by ronnie, about Gary Rossington (Not Collins). It is about Rossinton buying a brand new car, getting drunk and crashing it into a tree. He actually even crashed it into a house after the tree | |

| This song is about Gary crashing and yes Oak tree and house (Collins and Van Zant wrote the song) USCOTT is dead on, also Allen crashed in '86 his girlfriend was killed, he was paralyzed , both of his daughters are fine and both still alive today, one even lives in the house Allen built. As for the smell of people who don't bath and do drugs, the lyrics clearly state the SMELL OF DEATH SURROUNDS YOU , clearly it is because he almost died, and if he kept up his addiction would end up dead in the not to distant future | |

| it was about garry rossington wrecking his car not allen, allen did get inti about 12 car wrecks though, my dad was actually there for one of em, and on this ocasion allen did hit a tree but not because he was boozed, he just liked to drive too fast, but you really cant beat that dueling guitar part at the end. | |

| First off guys, you must not know Skynyrd history.Allen Collins had the wreck after the plane crash, and Ronnie Van Zant wrote the song,so apparently it cant be about Colins' wreck.Although,it is about Ronnie being fed up with Artimus and Allen's shooting up and drinking. | |

| I think monkeyman's interpretation is interesting--not to mention that a drug addict would be too f*cked up to care if he bathed or not. But the smell is primarily a reference to the odor of the drugs themselves. Overall, there's just a stench of ill health and addiction around the subject of the song. | |

| This song was written before Allen Collins crippling car crash. It was however written about Rossington and (I think) Collins by Ronnie - the irony was that the "smell of death" applied to Ronnie shortly after the song's release. | |
