It may be more than wanting and needing someone. It may be the need for something more to fill your life, which in Mae's case would be God. Just food for thought.

I think that the couple in this song are still together and he is just showing how much he loves her by saying that he needs her there tonight. She makes everything better. This album could easily be the best album of 05.

I think he's talking about a relationship that's seen it's better days. There's something that's blocking them from being how they were, but when she's with him he realizes that he really needs her no matter what the problem. It's really sweet and I love the song. It's so beautiful.

As we can see our friend is in love but with new found love brings alot of confusion and doubt. I'd like to think this guy is sitting on the beach at night by himself (or a whale... you know) contemplating the whole thing and feeling really alone and confused at the same time. So he looks up at the stars and asks God to guide hime through this one... because he really doesn't know what his next move is supposed to be.

ok, this song must have been written for my friend. she and her boyfriend rob broke up but they are still attached to eachother somehow. they always call eachother and hang out and rob always does things for her. the thing is that he does things to piss her off too, like hanging out with this girl elizabeth. my friend knows that elizabeth likes him and so she has told rob not to hang out with her, but he still does and even calls her when he is with elizabeth. i think that's why they wont get back together. but the thing is, i think it is clear that they are meant for eachother. the uncanny similarity to the song is that, when they were going out, rob would come over in the middle of the night and sleeps in her bed (even though they dont do any of that stuff) and just lays there with her. he still does that, even though they are not together. she loves this song, and now i know why. she still loves him.

"It may be the need for something more to fill your life, which in Mae's case would be God." mae is not a christian band. they've stated this specifically on their website. while i don't doubt that some of the band members have christian beliefs, i don't think that they mean for all of their songs to be interpreted in a religious way. i've seen a lot of people on this site try to connect the songs to god somehow. a lot of them could be interpreted that way, but i doubt that they were written with that connection in mind; if they had been, mae would've just come out and said they were a christian band. anyways. this is a great song.

So this song is def. about a confused relationship. They person singing thinks they are in love and needs this person to make there life move forward, "just like the ocean needs the waves" the ocean and the waves are a constant cycle, without each other one could not exist. Refering to "the dark" and "tonight" is the empty space that they are feeling without the person, "cant sleep myself till day" The light and the "stars" are the person they are longing for. "i need you here tonight just like this night it needs the rain" for him to move on he needs her gone, the hollow space will wash away once the thought of her is earsed. Refering to the seasons changing is the growth in his life. hes moved on but "coming over unannounced" is her memory not her literally coming to come, he is just thinking and missing her again. he still loves her, but he has moved on by the end of the song, "just like the ocean needs the waves. just like the stars that fall around me now." light vs dark, his new life, and fading memories that hes still holding onto
