| Julio commited suicide way more than 2 years ago, even back in the old At the Drive In days the song Embroglio was written about him, and the lyrics were written more by Omar and and Jeremy Ward (the sound manipulator who unfortanely died last year) The album is conceptual to Julios comatose and the dreams he had are not real, they are just fantasy writings, very awesome ones at that might i add... the only factual lyrics in this album are son et lumiere and inertiatiac esp and televators which portrays Julios suicide (he jumped of a bridge), otherwise he is just entering his coma state and his dream adventures are taking place, | |

| The mysteries of Mars Volta. What does Mars Volta mean? This is the obvious starting point in unravelling the mysteries of this band. In my search I stumbled across a forum that presented two quotes from interviews with members of the band, offering two slightly different explanations. “The 'Volta' is taken from a (Federico) Fellini book about his films, what he characterises as a changing of scene, a new scene to him is called 'Volta'. Y'know, changing of time and the changeover. And 'Mars', we're just fascinated by science fiction so' and it's something that ultimately looked' as in anything I write, it's meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would.”- Sedric "The word "Volta" I found in a book on Federico Fellini, that's a word that he just kept using. I just thought it was an interesting word. It means a turn around in music, it means the other side, it's a river, it's the sixth line in a sonnet where the writer contradicts himself. And Mars comes from Greek mythology, the god of war."- Omar. The planet mars is obviously named after the Roman god of war, and the two stories back up. It leaves us still with one question, which is, who is Federico Fellini? Who is Federico Fellini? Federico Fellini was an Italian director/writer in the 20th Century. Born in 1920 he grew up in a country initially dominated by Mussolini and Pope Pius XII. Fellini started recording his dreams in notebooks during the 60’s and they inspired his films. His films were numerous and in 1964 he won an Oscar for “Best Foreign Film”, to which he responded "In the myth of the cinema, Oscar is the supreme prize." Deloused In The Comatorium. An album, a fantastic album, which follows the journey of ‘Cerpin Taxt’ as he finds himself in a coma. This has obvious links with the dream inspired films of Fellini, coma fantasies, and this is what the album would appear to be about, indeed it does explain the title, or would seem too. The ‘Cerpin Taxt’ of the album would appear to be one ‘Julios Venegas’, a friend of the band, more about him later. Deloused: Verb: to free someone of lice. This may not necessarily mean physical lice, but lice of the mind, perhaps being in the comatorium helped the individual to solve some problems, think some things through. Comatorium: This word does not appear in the dictionary, but seems to be the location were someone would be in a coma, or perhaps the world inspired by his dream. I will now look at the songs one by one in an effort to comprehend Cerpin Taxt’s journey in its entirety. Son et Lumier (Sound and Light). “Clip side of the pinkeye flight (1) I'm not the percent you think survives (2) I need sanctuary in the pages of this book (3) Gestating with all the other rats (4) Nurse said that my skin will need a graft (5) I am of pockmarked shapes (6) The vermin you need to loathe (7)” It may help to know that the song was originally combined with Inertiatic, but the songs were separated, simply to increase the amount of tracks on the album. This song would be the first of three ‘factual’ songs on the album, the others being Inertiatic and Televators. Julios’ first suicide attempt took place when he tried to overdose himself on rat poison, not his Mothers morphine, as some will tell you. ‘Pink eye’, supposedly when an individual shoots himself up with a drug his eyes will go bloodshot afterwards, and a tell-tale sign of a heroin addict is a pinkness in there eyes. Line 2 is a clear indication of his intentions to kill himself; the individual doesn’t want to live anymore. Line 3, this is a grey area, I, personally interpret it as referring to Fellini’s books on dreams, where the word Volta originates from, and perhaps now that he cannot die, he will find rest, and a chance to asses his situation in his coma dreams. Line 4 is often believed to be because of the rat poison, but as this is not the case it is perhaps due to his surroundings when he attempts suicide, maybe he was with drug addicts, I do not know, and information on such has proved hard to come by for me. Line 5, maybe a reference to the scars on his arm, described on the Mars Volta site, and how he will require surgery to repair the damage. A skin graft is when either the patient’s skin, or prosthetic skin is used to repair the damage. Line 6 may be a reference to the scars, the ‘marked’ specifically. Line 7 may be a reference to the drug addicts he is surrounded with, or maybe a reference to himself, please don’t hate me for this. The title, means “Sound and Light” and may be a reference to the beginning of these fantasies that appear in later songs. We must remember at this point he isn’t in the coma, and perhaps this is in reference to his guilt and such. | |

| This whole album stirred so much inside me that I started writing out meanings to every single song. I figured I would try it out on here and see what everyone thought about it. So here goes nothing... sorry it's kind of long. Son Et Lumiere- Sound and Light Beginning – I feel that with the feedback and the full undertones of the keyboard it is meant to sound like an ambulance coming closer and closer. The intensity of the sound escalates towards the beginning of the actual singing. Clipside of the pinkeye fountain- I read somewhere that this is a reference to shooting the actual morphine into your arm. The “pinkeye” referring to the drop of blood/morphine mix at the end of the needle from checking your vein. The fountain, of course, refers to the morphine inside the needle. Pushing it in releases a large amount at once like a fountain, or geyser, perhaps. I’m not the percent you think survives- I take this to mean that from the looks of this man’s health and the scars on his body you wouldn’t believe that he could actually survive this overdose of morphine. He’s already changed the odds just by surviving. Being observed in a different way. I need sanctuary in the pages of this book- I feel this means he wants to be left alone. To sort through things. Maybe not being able to with nurses and doctors around in the hospital. Or even before the overdose. Being unhappy with his life and not being able to cope. Just taking time out to chill and relax is necessary sometimes. Gestating with all the other rats- gestating meaning essentially to carry. Blending in with the rats. Julio shot rat poison in his arm. Perhaps, Julio identifies with the rats because he felt the effects of the rat poison that killed them. Or going a different route, being able to relate to all the other druggies in the sense where carrying the same “weight” on his shoulders that forces all other druggies to turn to the drugs in the first place. The druggies being the rats of course. Bottom of the food chain. Vermin. Nurse said that my skin will need a graft- Julio’s arm; I believe I read, was decrepit from the rat poison. Shriveled and not of much good use. Perhaps this leads us to believe that they wanted to try and save the arm or the damages that the poison has done to Julio’s skin. I am of pockmarked shapes- Julio’s skin was covered in scars. I believe that is the reference made with pockmarked shapes. The vermin you need to loathe- Again, as I stated earlier. Vermin being the drug addict. Below you. With loathe, it’s stating that you are supposed to hate this person and look down on them for what they are and how low they have fallen. Kick them while they are down. Drums come in, leading to Inertiatic ESP- I believe the drums are to accentuate what this man is feeling. He is shooting this large amount of morphine into his body and it’s hitting him like the beat of the drums. The moment of pure exhilaration and adrenaline rush before he blacks out going into the coma. The “ambulance” is still heard in the background. This just hit me… the hitting of the drums could actually be his heartbeat. Going all uneven and slowing down towards the end, trying to accommodate what has happened. The last drum solo of this song is like the defibrillator bringing his heart back to a normal rate. | |

| well of course it flows into inertiatic, they were originally one song but universal made them split them up to get more tracks on the album. "gestating with all the other rats" refers to how he shot up rat poison. its essentially just before he enters his coma/delirium type state in inertiatic. | |

| the whole album is about julio hands down we've got that settled, i think hes trying to say "Clipside of the pinkeye flight" Pinkeye maybe his eyes are bloodshot and by flight hes means hes about to do something. I'm not the percent you think survives By this I think he means hes not the type of person to survive this I need sanctuary in the pages of this book Maybe sanctuary refers to religion or a doctor and book means a bible or papers on his current status Gestating with all the other rats Hes lying around with all the other patients Nurse said that my skin will need a graft a graft could mean a x-ray I am of pockmarked shapes could be his way of saying his status The vermin you need to loathe and this might be his way of saying watch out i am gonna do this again dont save me Well thats just my opinion dont bash me for it | |

| MisanthropeKitty is near 100% right, the last paragraph is a good observation, and a great assumption. I don't want to repeat what everyone said, but to shortly recap any false info; Julio does shoot up rat poison, he does jump off a bridge to commit suicide. Julio dies during the ATDI years, and ..de-loused in the comatorium..the book and the album is about Julio. | |
