Basically I see this as being like Twister62 said. This is very much about sex. They start it out as kind of a fling type thing then when he thinks about turning into a relationship they feel it all come apart. He isn't going to let it get to him since nothing was ever started anyway though.

This song is about having an affair. He is living a double life. One with his family and one with his mistress.. "I found out one life ain't enough I need another soul to feed on I'm the flame I can't get burnt I'm wholly understated" He wants her to be descrete about the affair... "Don't wear my heart on your sleeve Like a high school letter" He started off just using her as an affair but towards the end of the song he wants to be with her. the world crumbling signifies what will happen if he were to leave his family but he wants to be with her..." dreamed that the world was crumbling down We sat on my back porch and watched it I dreamed that the buildings all fell down We sat on my back porch and watched it In my head I heard the sound Like fifteen strangers dancing But oh how I want you to know me Oh how I want you to know me Oh how I wish I was somebody else, baby Oh how I wish you could own me"

by Eamon on 10-07-2004 @ 12:52:51 AM I strap on one horse and prayed for luck I dug another hole to bleed I know exactly how this works I need a new feel dirty I love the way Rob Thomas' voice sounds on the part but I'm not sure how these lyrics fit into the song

I don't think he is cheating (or at least if he is, he didn't write this song about it). When he says "I found out one life just ain't enough- i need another soul to feed on," the soul he's already "feeding on" is his own. He has learned how to exploit himself completely and efficiently, he needs something more tangible (something where he can see the "damage" instead of feel it)- it reminds me of the Pedro the Lion lyric "Jesus said He would fill my needs- but my heart still bleeds- He's just not physical" I don't make this connection based only upon the desire for physical contact (which the first 3/4 of this song is about). Just as Pedro the Lion's Bazan is looking to Jesus as a complete (better said perhaps as multi-faceted... maybe life-encompassing) solution, Thomas wants this girl to give his life direction, to understand him, and in doing so grant him understanding of himself- best shown in the repeated line "oh how I want you to know me." In Push and Back 2 Good from the same album, Thomas expresses that his current relationship is lacking. "You don't own me" (from Push) is the theme of much of the album. This song is different. Whoever the song is about, his current relationship isn't fulfilling enough. Despite the otherwise headstrong lyrics to this song, its verses end saying "Oh how I wish you could own me." First let's clarify what Thomas means by ownership- because it is quite the opposite of our normal view of the word. He wants this girl to be unequivocally his, to requite his consuming attachment to her. He doesn't mean personally own, but mutually... symbiotically own. The conflict between the subjects desire to be "owned" and his current, one-sided relationship helps make this album this band's best.

imo, its about a young relationship that starts really powerful, but after spending too much time together, it turns into a physical relationship with no emotion involved, although they think there is because thats what they are used to. and the song goes through the process of realizing this.

yes, probably the sexiest mb20 song...I looove how Rob changes his voice to express that feeling... It's obviously about sex...but I don't see it like most of you, I think you can sense Rob's yearning for something more... At least that has always been my interpretation of the song...desire and sadness because maybe a rejection or indiference..."how I want you to know me..."...And it's also exposed in that weird "I dream that the world is coming down, we sat on my back porch and watch it": here I see an unclosed issue, maybe they didn't have the chance to talk things over (at least that's what I used to do in my back porch...and this song has made me picture a hundred things in my mind about a relationship that was so...deceptive to me). I enjoy so much this song...shows up vulnerability in a kind of anguished way

I think it's about people who sleep together. He's got this thing going on with this girl where there's a purely physical attraction and things tend to happen when they're together. But that's it. I don't need you crowding up my space I just want to get inside you A part of him wants to be with her for real: Oh, how I want you to know me Oh, how I wish I was somebody else, baby Oh, how I wish you could own me But ultimately he's not ready for that kind of commitment. I am the flame, I can't get burned. He's reminding her that it's just sex, nothing more.

It is a sexual song. I think possibly he's cheating but there's starting to be emotion between him and his fuck friend and he's wanitng to get out. I could be completely wrong on that part.

Like everyone before me: it's a sexual song, definitely. But the meaning of the song is secondary, in my opinion, to the general sound and feel of the song. The guitar is perfect, and I love how it speeds up for the chorus. Incidentally, isn't it "I found solace in this place" not "I found silence in this place" before the first chorus?

"...I strap on one horse and prayed for luck I dug another hole to bleed I know exactly how this works I need a new feel dirty..." to go along with twister62's idea.... its about a purely sexual relationship... ... quite bluntly... the "horse" is a condom (trojan) and hes hoping he doesnt get her pregnant... "hole to bleed": him having sex with her is his release... he feels relived of his stress(sorrow, etc.) when they fuck... (hence the praing for luck with the condom) the rest is him realizing that this release is becoming old... it no longer has the same effect on him as it once had... he needs to find something new.... out of every matchbox20 and tabithas secret songs.. this is my favorite... it has such emotion and meaning....

This is a rebound relationship song... saying he's messed up, he's not who she thinks he is & not to fall for him becuase he needs her to feel better, but he will never be the person she would need or want him to be.
