| Jupiter03 is right, Rob Thomas was dating a girl who's nephew died (kody) and although he didnt know the family very well the funer really touched him. And yes cody was an infant or young child who died during a complicated surgery. | |

| I think that this guy Kody killed himself at the avenue. He was obviously a good friend, who would let himself in through the back gate. After Kody's death, Rob had trouble sleeping, lying awake listening for the gate, the silence being a painful reminder of his loss. Friends and family probably advised him to go to the avenue, to get some kind of closure but he didn't know if he could. Don't get down much to the avenue I could drive but it takes so much to get there It's an amazing song. My favourite line is I've seen a lot of good things die and I'm in an over emotional way I think everyone has felt that way before | |

| This is a great song the best one from matchbox 20 i think its about a hobo though. Like a homeless man. And he has noone and nowhere to go. So he drinks life away. So please hand me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now And please give me direction, I think the hurt set in And I don't feel nothing | |

| I think the song is about losing someone and not being able to get back to life... Examples: "Please give me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now." "Please give me direction" And the point of the squeek hinge is that if Kody doesn't come through it, something's wrong. I myself like how the song starts with Kody at what could be a car accident and possibly contemplating suicide, and ends with the Narrator standing in the same exact place and state of mind, demonstrating a circle. One of my favorite songs by them. | |

| this song reminds me of my foster brother, he was severely disabled and it was never as obvious what he meant to me until he died. We fostered him from being 4 up2 him passing away at 18, he was only 4 months older than me so there was a connection in the feeling that he shouldve been doing the things that i was doing. My relationship was a lot like Rob's to the child because although he lived with us, his condition made it impossible to really know him. It seems really quiet now he's gone and the 'squeak hinge' line is my connection to the song. I love the chorus, there is so much feeling, as in the rest of the song and most MB20 songs. Great lyrics, great feeling, the reasons i love MB20 | |

| To me this song is about being secluded from the rest of the world and not knowing what to do. "Kody", representing loneliness, has "got no reasons" to live. He has his "hat of broken dreams" and takes them out when he needs something to work for. He is asking for direction in his life but does not know what to do or where to go. He is asking to "please give me the bottle" as a way of stating his feelings and emotions about the world. He feels that drinking will relieve him from the stress and reality of his life. The line: "There's a squeak hinge down on the back gate It lets us know if he comes around I don't sleep that good anyway If you've never heard the silence, it's a God awful sound" .. refers to Kody waiting for someone to come and fix his problems for him but nobody is coming. He is lonely and has nobody to save him from his position. It's a god awful silence when nobody comes to save you from a deep-down situation. When he says "I could drive, but it takes so much to get there," he is saying that he (Kody) can get somewhere if he works for it but it takes too much work to reach his goal. All in all, it is, to me, about a lonely person who has nothing in his life. He is an outcast to society and cannot find a way out of his situation. | |

| "I don't sleep that good anyway If you've never heard that silence, it's a God awful sound" Perfect description of what it's like in the middle of the night, when the world is asleep and you're not able to sleep. You have to experience it to understand it. | |
