| Actually I thought it was abt how he sees a kid enjoying life and he wishes he could be dat kid again. 'You're laughing out loud At just the thought of being alive' and ' You show your pain Like it really hurts And I can't even Start to feel mine' sortof affirms dat. But I'll take bbf2's word for it. Earnest lyrics. | |

| I think this song is abot a break up. He tells her she's laughing out loud just at the thought of being alive...meaning he's hurting inside and she seemed to have moved on so easily. that's why he want to be her... | |

| I think it could be either about Rob or a girl ... it's just about being free for once, finally letting go. You've got all this crap inside and you see this other person whose got the same crap just throwing it off. If you read the lyrics you can really see the struggle for the poetry in song writing that Rob uses, "somehow the right thing to say, just won't come out" So, I think it could be about just about anyone, it's being jealous of someone who can let go, who can deal with their problems ... "I see your progress stretched out for miles" | |

| i think its about a guy who breaks up with a girl and decides to go out and be with a lot of other girls. the girl can't get over him, but she wants to and be with someone else, too. | |

| This song was actually written by Paul, one of the members of the band. He was writing about how he was somewhat jealous of Rob getting all the attention of the band and all the fame, and how for one night it would be good just to be Rob and bask in the glory of fame or something. Rob saw the lyrics and decided to make it a song. Which means that when Rob sings this song, he's singing to/about himself, from Paul's point of view. Kinda creepy. | |

| How about this...total 180, but what about... A drug addict or alcoholic who is trying to get clean. But he/she just cant bring themself to do so. And this whole time, they see these other addicts getting help/getting clean. And they envy that. just a thought. | |

| It could be either about a girl, or Rob's place..I couldn't tell...but as a matter of fact I love the poetry in it. | |

| I think that that lyric ('you're laughing out loud, at just the thought of being alive') is incredibly beautiful. He's looking at this girl and he wants to be her because she can see the joy in life and he can't. | |

| I think this song is about a chick who breaks up with her boyfriend for no apparent reason, maybe because she wants time apart, maybe because she just doesnt like him anymore. They're both getting some sympathy from their friends, relatives, the like because they've been in a relationship for years and it's finally ended. The chick, however, is getting heaps more attention and saying all this crap like the guy cheated on her, the guy beat her, just so she gets the attention. And then the guy realises the truth- the chick only broke up with him to get attention. I think this is evident in the line "And I'm standing in place With my head first And I shake I shake I shake And I see your progress Stretched out for miles" MB20 have been my favourite band for EVER and I was raised on them since I was about... 4. or 3 years old. If anyone has the guys' adresses so I can write to them, that would be awesome ;) | |

| Paul wrote the song about a person that hides his or her pain really well. He wishes he could be that person because he just can't hide his pain. | |

| I have a faint idea of what this song is about, and it relates to some of thesse comments fot the most part. I just think this song is incredibly beautiful. My favorite line is "You're laughing out loud At just the thought of being alive"...its just so amazing in meaning and the way Rob sings it. | |

| i meant "emphasizes" not "empathizes" emphasize= to stress importance of something. empathize= to show understanding of something. for those that dont know the difference in meanings. | |

| I really like this song. I think that it is like about friends. The one person it feeling the pain. And when the other perosn says that atleast they are still alive they just laugh. Maybe becasue they have already tried to kill themselves or somethign like that. And the friend that is watching them go through all this just wants to take away the pain for one night. He wants to let them have a good time liek he always does and wants to know what his friend goes through everyday. And when the song says "And I see your progress Stretched out for miles And miles" I think that it is him telling his friend that you have come so far and that even though i can't be you and know what you are going through i can still support you and be here for you along a long journey that you are making so mcuh progress on! | |

| i think the songs bout a broken relationship. well now that i know its not i cant say that lol, but for anyone who can relate to music the song can be about anything they want... so.... "Something is wrong With the sum of us That I can't seem to erase" so many people (the sum) who get heart broken cant get over their loss of love and have trouble getting by. he knows this and can't help but dwell on it. "How can I be The only one Without a smile on my face" he knows others are not smiling too, alot of people, yet there isnt anyone around him who is as sad as him, hence he is the only one without a smile on his face. "When now You're laughing out loud At just the thought of being alive" he now sees how happy his former lover is now that he's out of the picture and she is lively and excited about life once again. "And I was wondering Could I just be you tonight?" he is hurting from the sad ending of their relationship and he wishes he could get over it as fast as she and not hurt so much, hence "could i just be you tonight" "You show your pain Like it really hurts" like many people they still talk every so often and she sumtimes empathises that she too still hurts and tries hard to make it believable, hence "like it really hurts" "And I can't even Start to feel mine" this does not, to me, say he doesnt hurt. i take it as he hurts so deeply it has numbed him and he cant even begin to get ahold of his emotions. "And I'm standing in place With my head first" he is still in the same position when they broke it off (im standin in place)...he once thought with his heart now he can only think with his mind, hence "with my head first" basically he knows now that he cannot let his heart do all the thinking for him, he has to use his head to rationalize and see truth from now on. "And I shake, I shake" he is overwhelmed by his emotions and is basically tense and a nervous wreck all the time from constant thought which leads to anxiety and fear he'll never move on. "And I see your progress Stretched out for miles And miles" he sees how good she is getting along and how much she has improved without him. "This is the sound that I make These are the words I chose" he would like to cry out (the sound) and express himself to her what he is going through. he knows in his mind what he means and repeats and recomposes what he would like to say to her over and over, "hence "these are the words i chose" "But somehow the right thing to say Just won't come out" he knows if he tried to explain anything or everything he would most likely mess up what he truely meant to say and always say to himself "i should have said this, or that" thats my take on that song, matchbox has been for a long time my favorite band and always will be... i have alot of feeling for all their songs and i can deeply relate to the sad lyrics of their sad songs.. by the way, that take on the song from me stemmed deeply from a relationship i had of five years that ended seven months ago... every word of this song seems like its coming from MY mind when im listening to it, it's that relative to me. peace. | |

| This song is every single reason why Paul should definitly write more and Rob needs to take a break. Rob is getting softer. Paul is right on key. His solo work is amazing. I always liked this song, but never could figure out the backstory. That's good songwriting I guess. Something everybody can relate to. | |
