It's about the never-ending quest for human knowledge

its all in the mind."through the never" means that the time doesnot exists, nothing does, everything is illiusion, the "never" and this is a pity for humans who think that they are smart creatures. we still cant answer the most basic questions. i must listen for a science student or a philospher. best lyrical work by metallica in the black. METALLICA HAS PLAYED LARGER THAN LIFE SONG< ITS ONE OF THEM.

it's all about a quest for how time began, based on the theory of the Big bang

It does seem to be about a quest for knowledge, but I'm assuming there is an underlying meaning as with most Metallica songs. Just a guess here, but it could be about how our curiosity gets the best of us. We want to know everything about everything, but there are some things we will never understand and we have to accept that. However, it's human nature to pursue the things that we want the most so it's natural that we try so hard to understand the thing that is hardest to understand... ie space. This song is more of an analogy about human nature.

"The Never" is space. It's an expression of how infinite the void is... "Time and space never ending" I think the following stanza solidifies this interpretation: "Gazing up to the breeze of the heavens On a quest, meaning, reason Came to be, how it begun All alone in the family of the sun Curiosity teasing everyone On hour home, third stone from the sun…Ye-ye-ye-yeah!!!"

god dont exist, awareness do. If all humans die. awareness will die, so will god, god wont be there, i means it dont exist except in the MIND to be more percise the human mind. God is not a person or a thing, its a phenomenon that started happening not prior to all the creations but is a creation in itself, a creation of awareness. Awereness made the god, now if the awareness die the god wont die, unless the theory of god is destoryed before its death. ARROGANCE AND IGNORANCE GO HAND IN HAND other metallica line, it tells, Humans are really arrogant about there awareness which makes them ignorrent about the other possibilities of awareness. Metallica being humble accepts the limitation of human mind as a ultimate decider or a solution provider. So the best we can do is to stick to the fact that there is no present, there is a PAST AND A FUTURE BEWEEN WHICH EXIST THE NEVER. Humans just passes through that never, dont stay there, we simply cant. WELL ONE WHO CAN STAY THERE WILL FIND THE ANSWERS AND RELIEVE THE HUMANS OF THE CURIOSITY THAT TEASES THEM

for those familiar with HP Lovecraft you might see some similarities between the general idea expressed here and some of the more demonic forces in the Cthulu mythose (nyarlathotep comes to mind). considering that there are two songs we KNOW to be about Cthulu himself it doesn't seem out of the questions. just a thought.

I really like Whiplash's theory, bu i feel that there is another meaning in thee somewhere. it may also be about questioning what we can achieve and about struggling to leave behind humanity- rising above ourselves. This is actually pretty similiar to whiplashs idea

Really phylosophical song. there aren't that many of those in heavy metal music and that's one reason I love 'Tallica. sort of points out how puny mankind actually is compared to the Universe(so big that it's called Never).as much as man would like to explore this vast space he is tied in chains by his need to survive 'We hunger to be alive' and his 'limitations of human understanding'. These lyrics rival with the philosophy classics! P.S. Chietrea SUCKS!

I agree that this song is geared toward The Universe and Man's eternal quest for knowledge, meaning and understanding. Another Metallica Great!!!!!
