| I'm reading Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse for one of my classes. I'm about 60 pages into it and this song poped into my head as soon as I got to one of the quotes. In Steppenwolf, Hesse talks about the sheer torture of idleness and "contentment" that rides between pain and pleasure. The character of Steppenwolf represents the half man half wolf that Hesse portrays the middle class man is. A man who on one side loves contentment and painless comfort and on the other side loves to romp through a house with muddy shoes on, not in destruction, but to live intensely and and with feeling. He abhors the lukewarm middle class life of medicority, of neitehr extreme. | |
