This song sucks, St. anger sucks. Sounds like the whole album is paraphrased 12 step program ideas. Where is the "master of puppets", where is the "one". I am all for growth and change as a musician, but come on. Write decent lyrics, spend more than an hour on the album.

I can relate to the kid in this story a lot. I'm guessing it's about Kirk because guitarists (like myself) are often quiet and somewhat anti-social at times. But we have confidence and can light up a room when we want to... with or without our instruments. The kid's invisible because no one notices him. He was probably outcasted and has since learned to love the silence, much like an old man would. "Got stuck where he did" - stunted his personality growth at the age he became invisible, but don't confuse that with maturity "Inward he's grown" - he knows himself "Suspicious of your touch" - paranoid because he trusts no one, probably cuz he sees through their lies (not a game player)... I doubt it has to do with child abuse

I very well could be about Kirk. It could be about James, Lars, or Kirk. James actually allowed the other two to write lyrics for this album. Being void of a permanent bassist during the recording, however, they did not let Bob Rock write lyrics.

The issue with st anger wasnt that they changed the direction of the music, it was that they didn't do anything that hadn't really been done several times before. If they were going to do an alt metal album they should've tried to be innovative.

I agree that it isn't their best album and that it's missing one of the best parts of Metallica music - Kirk's solos - but keep listening to the album, it grows on you. It might be samey and the drums have been overproduced a little bit, but it's still good.

im a huge metallica fan but i can admit that St anger isnt a great album. the lyrics arent clever, and i could go on listing the other problems with the album but i know you've heard it all before. i think even metallica would admit it needed guitar solos, after they added them into songs like frantic and dirty window when they played them live

anyway, the lyrics are not that oscure or layered it seems ut the suject matter is good. Actually, in a way I can realate it to "one". I believe its aout a kid "who knows what age" but he is so uncomfortale with people that he at some point locks all his feelings and pain inside himself thinking that he can take care of them himself. He grows up and doesn't realize what he is doing, still wanting love from others but he becomes a lie. Eventual ending is kind of grim, descriing him as "flooting in his room". His room is his outside visile self and he is all alone with just his own thoughts. Thats kind of why I think of "one"

I just need to comment on Metallikcker and flashoftheblade2005. Mark my words, Metallica have NEVER released CRAP. Every album (Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, ReLoad), every song(no need to list them) is good music. You may not like it, you may find it horrible bu it is good music. St. Anger's no exception. It is good music. If you're so narrowminded you don't make the diffrence between good music, bad music, music you like, and music you don't like, you're fucking pathetic and should STFU! Now... what's so great lyrically about Master of puppets or One? In what way are they superior lyrically than this song? They're the same quality of songwriting if not a lower one.
