I don't think this song is about drugs at all. It, like "Different City" is more of a socio-political commentary than anything else. As already mentioned, it's about commercialism and consumerism and all other sorts of controversial "isms". To me, the song seems to take the perspective of a businessman.

Funky ass song, here's my shot at what he may have intended to say... I'd say its about commericalism and industrialism. It pretty much kinda says we've ruined the world. As for the weird chorus, I think its a plea for help to escape. How can a body get away from the destruction people cause to each other and the environment? Its pretty tough. So meanwhile we're drinking coca-cola and enjoying ourselves wearing T-shirts that say "The world is my ashtray." The hell part is genius. Hell has frozen over, meaning the unthinkable has happened. Hey boy get a sweater is telling the person that he is going to hell. Ah, what a song

i personally highly doubt this song is about self-destruction and drug abuse. i do however thing is about the human races path to an eventual end although not by bombing the hell out of the planet but by pollution and creating non-degradable waste which we just throw into the oceans and onto the earth. and as we're destroying the earth, the last few lines make it seem as though we dont care and we're just relaxing enjoying the diminishing view.

i would have to agree with benny and the chorus is saying doesn anybody know away to get away from this world thats so shitty.. and excape. and at first i thought it had to do with nuclear war far.. city of ashes.. and dressed up in plastic .. a neuclear suit and shake hands with all the hurt people..

I doubt it's about drugs. It has a meaning, just it's very elusive. I read somewhere, (Though I don't know if there's anything to invest it) that modest mouse got a lot of the lyrics for this album from a guy who turned out to be insane? I dunno, if that is true then obviously the meaning is going to be harder to find. Every song has a meaning, so this song is not "ridiculous".

Anyone else think this song sounds like something Frank Zappa would write?
