This is one of my 5 current favorite MM songs. For me personally, this song is about caring about another person who is "down" in some way (mentally, emotionally, maybe even their place in life) and lowering yourself down to them so they aren't alone, but it's not good for you. But, uh, there is the laugh...so either it's a sarcastic laugh or this song isn't as serious as I think it is.

This song seems to be very introspective. Modest Mouse may be referring to the demons we have to encounter within ourselves. “My name is you.” The Devil’s apprentice introduced later on in the lyrics refers to the way in which many of those who are self-conscious play devil’s advocate with themselves and pick apart everything they do. “He fed me a line and I’ll probably regret it,” warns that accepting empty compliments or such would induce an undesirable result – i.e. laziness or complacency. The reference to drugs is only a metaphor. Perfectionists probably aren’t the happiest in the world and oftentimes an abundance of self-doubt leads to feelings of depression and contemplation of suicide. Thus, “Flies, they gather around me and you too” which also refers to feelings of worthlessness. The song also expresses a great deal of internal conflict as experienced when one is trying to rationalize unhappiness or escape down-trod emotions and an attempt to cauterize the bad within oneself which is depicted as a fatal wound.

the moon and antarctica is one of the darkest i have ever heard from modest mouse. this song is very heavy. in the beginning its very creepy, the flies gives the impression of rotting like youre dying or stuck in one place. its like this person is depressed who he cares about and its not really his fault but he didnt really do anything about it. the devil fed me a line....not drugs but like the phrase feed me a line like gives you something to say. maybe using it as a double meaning. a drug addict stuck ina rut and hes the person who got them to try it? i think its a very sad song very depressed . cos i dont want you to be alone down there to be alone down there to be alone its sad but mildly optimisitic i feel like its a love song of some sorts. just the fact i dont you to be alone down there. really emphasizes those lines (well its typical modest mouse to make the chorus very strong and intense) but really its the focus.

i'll have to disagree with above. God was never the devil's apprentice. i think this is more about personal stuggles... and how we all do things that we'll eventually regret. we all prolly at one time or another become the devils apprentice for the sake of personal interest. but MM does seem to knock God a lot... kinda makes me like them less...

"The Devil's apprentice he gave me some credit He fed me a line and I'll probably regret it" i always thought the "Devil's apprentice" was the big record label. This was the first album with Epic. i could be totally wrong though.
