i think this song is about several things. TV stained my memories, about how bad TV is and what scum it produces not only on it but the people on it and there lives. its REMEMBER THROUGH SOUNDS and the same with all the remembers except TOWNS which probably means whatever replaces whatever, you can always remember through sounds, smells, colors and remember the towns as they used to be with those senses. and the part... With fear and fascination On what was here And what's replacing them now Interchange causes a mall And crowded chain restaurants More housing developments go up Named after the things they replace... is pretty obvious, the big cities move in and people get kinda scared about the change and what they tore down and whats replacing them (e.g. chain restauants that cause traffic, and shopping malls that do the same) and its ironic that they would name these huge manufactured, cookie cutter houses after what they have torn down to put them there. and it seems abrupt because it is and the change of pace is... rash and irresponsible. just call me captain obvious.

Minnow Brook makes more sense, since minnows live in water.

I think this song, more than any other defines what Modest Mouse was about in the early days

"More housing developments go up Named after the things they replace So welcome to Minnow Brook And welcome to Shady Space" Wow. Possibly the best Modest Mouse lyric ever. It's pretty literal, so I won't go into 'what it means'. The song as a whole is about the idea of 'progess', and how, maybe, it was better off to begin with... "Remember her sounds Remember her smells Remember her colors" 'Remember' suggests that those things aren't there any more. Why? Because of progress!

I think that this song is stating that change is wrecking a lot of things.. that shouldn't be..changed. Saying that people are building and replacing things, and we have forgotten the more simple and wonderful things in life, that we should pay more attention to. That's just what i believe.

i agree...also in the lonesome crowded west "i didnt come to the city the city came to me" a lot of midwestern/western bands are just coming to terms with the urbanization of that area and STUFF (i.e. desaparacidos) sad :(

"TV stained my memories" sometimes, it's hard to tell what you saw on television or read or heard of or what actually happened. Especially with childhood. and all of the good things are becoming commercialized in this song. Very good, describes how I feel a lot of times.

i couldn't agree with you more bellyfull of swans. it's cool how this song starts out with a love song feel but changes pace when he explains different ideas of commercialism and urban sprawl. brock sings about the thoughts and ideas that i've always had, his play on words really puts coherent light on them.

agree fully with the first poster, lunatic96.. I think it's interesting that people are misinterpreting the lyrics as both "her" and "through"....since both things (a significant other and a neighborhood) are both VERY strong [and typically temporary] "environmental" factors in regard to someone's memories & ideals. my personal interpretation is: TV stained my memories, yeah I don't fit the shoes remember through sounds remember through......etc and I always thought it was "interchange plazas, a mall, and crowded chain resturants" (as in a list).. regardless, this has long been one of my favorite songs from MM. brilliant - musically, lyrically, and especially conceptually (that goes for the whole 'long drive' album).

It's about how humans are ruining shit, (I.E.: nature, animals, cities, towns, countryside). Isaac is from Washington, which, i am not sure (never been there) but i know there is a BIG shitload of a difference between Isaaquah and Seattle, Isaaquah = countryside, forests, wild animals. Seattle = City, christmas trees and mascots. So i think Isaac is basically stating that the whole world is being turned to shit due to corporate america or government, or just plain people. Isaac hates assholes like Cowboy Dan (he describes him in the song). This has been a public announcement by (CENSORED).
