To me the line that sticks out is the same as previously mentioned, "Rows of lights to illuminate lines Why don't they turn them off and let us see night Drove crazed grooming my lies You can't look in on one way eyes" To me this is much deeper. I feel that it means that we shouldn't shed light or try and figure things out that arn't supposed to be. Sometimes things need to be left how they were intended, Just Live.

"Rows of lights to illuminate lines Why don't they turn them off and let us see night" To me these lyircs go much deeper than the night sky. What do caution lights on the asphault and street lights do? Two things, create light and keep cars from running off the road. If you tun them off you see the beautiful night sky just before you plummet off a cliff and die, both heavenly things, People are too caught up on preventing death and create precautions that, besides gaurd the exit, keep us from seeing what is beautiful: Polution, seatbelts, censors, walls and the list goes on. I am 99% sure that is what Isaac is trying to tell us (also the theme of the whole album I believe) I realized this during a trip through colorado while my family was drivng down a mountain road, I watched the illuminated reflectors poles while listening to this song and WHAM! it hit me (the idea i mean)

Well, I doubt there's a tie, but when he says Ohio, it sounds a lot like Neil Young, and Young had a song, I think, called Ohio. ("Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, we're finally on our own...")

"Rows of lights to illuminate lines Why don't they turn them off and let us see night " This line from the song holds me spellbound every time it graces my car stereo, which trust me is more often than is probably healthy. I don't know if any of you have ever been to the open farmland of Ohio or perhaps some other desolate, flat, clear skied area of the midwestern USA but to look up and see black, the uninhibited heavens commanding your full attantion, if you haven't then me interpreting the song for you is a moot point. It instills such a sense of being so miniscule, and lets the mind wander away from the illuminated lines of everyday life and the thought boundaries which typically constrain us. It's almost like the metropolitan lights represent the wool being pulled over our eyes, a big festering distraction from the true meaning of things and our place amidst a churning cosmic sea. Throught the song the ideas of seeing clearly and seeking redemption from cracked a dry hearts, traveling through life awake but napping. In essence, to me the song is about losing meaning in this fast paced American life.

A touchOverrated is right. Ohio is boring. I live here, and I can't wait to get out. Great song, one of the best on the album.

i used to live in columbus, but i moved to a way smaller (about 3000 people) town out of state a few years ago. this song reminds me of how much i hate to go back for a visit.

this song has a lot to do with being alone and feeling lonely. maybe bored with everything and with that having to lose all care and nothing has any meaning like it should. nothing matters anymore nor is there a care to make it matter. things are just faded. "one hand clapping" "awake but napping" can prove these points. theres just no care to bother with it all because apparently he has just either figured something out or is in a depressed state of mine. either he has figured out the world and is so depressed or he is just upset about a situation that happened for instance maybe a break up or a heart break. who knows.

it's mostly been summed up pretty well by the others, but the two sets of lyrics that most say what this song about are: "rows of lights to illuminate lines / why don't they turn them off and let us see night?" simply put, streetlights from the sky at night (such as in an airplane) form lines from one town to another across an otherwise mostly-natural landscape. this is obviously a very *artificial* creation (artificial being the key word). 'turning them off and letting us "see night" simply means not being blinded by all of our modern artificial constructs, and being able to see things/the world for what they really are. religion, politics, silly social protocols and conventions, and obviously life-pollution in the form of urban/suburban sprawl. the other: "there's a lot going on underneath / there's roots, there's pipes, and there's drainage leaks" ...means pretty much the same. there's more to life and *being* than what's on the surface, but so many just fail to see that. isaac is brilliant.

Have you ever written a note to someone saying "I'm giving this note back?" It seems a logical way to utterly confuse anyone not familiar with Modest Mouse.
