Purveyors of quite startling, low-end alternative music, US trio Morphine were one of the few bands in the field not to employ guitars. The bass of vocalist Mark Sandman (b. 24 September 1952, d. 3 July 1999, Palestrina, Italy) was a rudimentary affair, comprising two strings usually tuned to the same note, enabling him to produce a sound that doubled as a heavily distorted guitar and ordinary bass.
