I think its about a relationship that fell apart. He still loves and cares about this person but because of whatever happened, he kept it to himself. They went their separate ways. They probably both hurt each other judging from the line, "our wrongs remain unrectified" It seems like he's saying now its too late to fix things because he is saying her lips are blue (implying death) and how she never knew how he only thought of her. In the end it says, "our souls won't be exhumed" which I think means that they will go to their graves with this unresolved. Its too late to fix it. Beautiful song.

i agree with ziggy... an absolutely wonderful song... very hypnotic. the singer is longing for what used to be, unfortunately they can't get past their mistakes "our wrongs remain unrectified"

this song is beautiful, the best on absolution in my opinion. the video ruins the whole thing though (grr) seems like the song is about forgiveness and comparing it to larger matters "souls" amd "grace" etc

I think that when the singer screams 'sing for absolution' he is not asking for personal forgivness like some have suggested, but is telling the masses to accept the undeniable fate that awates them. there's nowhere left to hide in no one to confide the truth runs deep inside and will never die almost as if to say 'alright guys, were well and truley rogered, all we can do now is sit and 'sing for absolution' and somehow hope that evrething will sort its self out'. Fading off topic a little but its funny how people only look to religon when there so screwed that no man/woman can help and only some kind of devine intervention can possibly attempt to aid. earler when i spoke of the 'undeniable fate' this is in refrence to global warming lips are turning blue (dead, maby drowned or frozen people) a kiss that can't renew (possibly this kiss of death we delivered to our planet?) one more point, in the video there is a funky kind of billboard as the band flee 'earth II' that says 'be prepared the ice age is coming' this backs up what i said previousley about global warming.

I agree with the 'end of the world' theory. Obviously if the world is ending there is 'nowhere left to hide', because where can you hide from the apocalypse? I think maybe 'I only dream of you and you never knew', could be the singers sudden appeciation for the world, the beauty of nature and the fact that as soon as he really started to appreciate it he can't have it, because it's all coming to an end. The 'falling from your grace' is the falling of mankind, the things we once valued so much, ie. money etc suddenley mean nothing. A very beautiful song from Muse, with a mindblowing solo at 3:08. Always makes me think of something that had previously seemed so right, slowly spiralling and going wrong.

I think it is quite blantant what it means. In a sense, there is a specific order that the first few songs follow. It follows Time Is Running Out on the album which was the idea of Government consipiracy and the end of the world. Sing for Absolution is taken from a dying perspective. So much of humankind lost to what has happened, and it's some sort of repent for what we have caused. It's also half of the dreaming of the days that were, before all of it happened. It's almost as if he wishes to be forgiven for the contribution as if he were speaking for all of mankind.

i agree with koinkoin about what it is about. I think though that this is about a guy who really is in love with this girl but he knows he can never have her (maybe she is engaged to another guy or something).i only dream of you and you never knew). His love is almost to the point of obsession and he decides that if he can't have her then no one can, and he is singing this to her while he is suffocating her as she sleeps (tiptoe to you room). And actually i just thought.......... that is quite basic i don't think that Matt would write a song with lyrics that are that much of a cliche. Hmmm...... it remains unknown!! I wonder if the bands ever look on here......................

SteppingOnShadows.... id agree that it follows on from time is running out, but i take the time is running out meaning as he is obsessed with a girl who is playing him around and who he knows he will never get, but just cant give her up. in sing for absolution, its a follow on, this is where he DOES give her up, or possibly make her his forever by killing her. not sure, but its definitly a follow on from time is running out.
