Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been
(written by: Trent Reznor)

Breeze still carries the sound
Maybe i'll disappear
Tracks will fade in the snow
You won't find me here

Ice is starting to form
Ending what had begun
I am locked in my head
With what i've done

I know you tried to rescue me
Didn't let anyone get in
Left with a trace of all that was
And all that could have been

Please, Take this
And run far away, Far away from me
I am tainted
The two of us Were never meant to be
All these pieces and promises and left behinds
If only i could see
In my nothing
You meant everything, everything to me

Gone
Fading
Everything

And
All that
Could have been
Could have been

Please, take this
And run far away, far as you can see
I am tainted
And happiness and peace of mind
were never meant for me
All these pieces and promises and left behinds
If only i could see
In my nothing
You meant everything, everything to me.

To me, this is a song about how someone tried to help him, but he didnt feel like he deserved their help, and pushed them away. "I know you tried to rescue me didn’t let anyone get in" "I am tainted the two of us were never meant to be" Its also about regret. He regrets how he pushed that person away, because he now realizes just how much they meant to him "in my nothing you meant everything everything to me" He realizes that if he hadnt pushed them away, there could have been a beautiful future. "and all that could have been"

"and happiness and piece of mind were never meant for me" The word in these two lines is supposed to be "peace" not "piece". As in the saying "peace of mind" which means mental stability.

trent is realizing that he has come to a turning point with nin, and he is kind of saying goodbye to the way things were, and the way things could have been. he is moving in a different direction with his music, as this is quite evident in his latest recordings including this one. his record label, his music, his nothing is personified in this song. and so it's time- once again- to turn the page.

the song seems to be a message to someone. no interpretation really required lyrically. It has been suggested amoung the NIN community that this song could be a message to the fans. Or prehaps someone off side in Trent's life.

this song could be about a person who doesn`t want to be wih any one else , even his,her or whatever most important thing because that person is tainted or spoiled.

BEAUTIFUL! I love NIN and this is one of Trent's best pieces. Written in A Warm Place, Hurt, and Great Below influences, but truly a Fragile piece. Simply beautiful!

thanks, kira midnight. that's exactly what I was going to say. *sigh* doesn't it suck when you hear such an immensely sad song like this and just know that it's your life in music? Yay for Trent and his ability to make songs that reflect EXACTLY how he feels, and in effect, reflecting how all us screwed up little bastards feel too.

The concept that "Nothing in life is sadder than what might have been" is devastating.

well, it felt to come at a perfect time in my life. My ex and i broke up, because he'd moved to ohio from texas about 9 months before. Hmmm, i think that something happened between two people, maybe. Maybe while in the "relationship" he did something foolish or embarassing, and the person/thing he was with was a crutch to try to help him out of his situation. He could be telling them to take the memories of what they have now and go, just leave maybe he's over-exaggerating a bit as well, "the two of us were never meant to be" maybe it just hurts so much he thinks that something so painful couldn't be natural.

Iamasexyrobot hit the nail dead on the head. At least I think so. "Musically Im intrigued by stripping away some of that ego and taht barrier. I want to broaden the palette and hopefully, explore more emotions in music."- Trent Reznor

This song is so beautiful, and goes with the Still cd very well. It seems to me that this song could be sort of a sequel to 'The Great Below', but who knows. I agree, Casey, he is a lyrical god.

i agree with CouldHaveBeen, i was going to mention that earlier, but definitely thats one of the most powerful moments in any nin song ever. it's absolutely amazing. also the "happiness and peace of mind were never meant for me" is sung in a way that is incredibly sad. i love this song so much, after deep i thougth he had lost his touch
