| This song kicks ass, and I'm ashamed to say this is only the 13th comment about it. Maybe besides "Right Where It Belongs", this is the best song on the album- and that's saying something! | |

| I think theoretically love is enough. God's love is enough IMO. Loving your neighbor the best you can is enough IMO. HOWEVER, in this song, Trent does seem to be speaking about internal issues where love may have not been enough, literally for X to occur. | |

| Sounds like a sequel of sorts to "We're In This Together Now" to me. | |

| The With Teeth album as a whole seems to indeed have many different layers, and the first theme I read into it was of a disillusionment with the current state of the world. This song was definately one of the first to give me that impression, as it seems that it is (coming from Reznor's perspective - who has wished and tried to help change this world for the better, through communication) a moment of bitter realisation of how unrealistic fixing the world is, as it has in fact only got progressively worse. 'They' say that love and time are great healers, but Reznor seems to be voicing his upmost disagreement with this sentiment, in the face of the unsurmountable odds that are becoming more clearly evident as each day passes us by. To me, there is an unspoken lyric here, hidden between the lines, that says, "Love is not enough (we need a miracle)", as the human concept of love is too limted in its scope to fully and truly heal this environment in which we find oursleves in. I also think this album is a reaction to the re-election of Bush, and that expecting compassion from the majority of voters (as he said once on his website) was asking and expecting too much, it now seems. This is where he sees the current situation as having become worse, and as being open only to further corruption. His last ray of hope for change has now vanished, and he feels as though he has been left alone in this cold, dark and hostile place. | |

| I think this song is like a message to himself about his past addictions. Almost like he is telling himself the lyrics. | |

| Lyrical correction : It's not "Now you've got independance to show" in the first section of the chorus, it's "Now you've got anything left to show" Great song... | |

| The lyrics in this are so very wrong... "We TRIED to forget" "The TOWEL on the floor so cold it can sting." "Well it hides in the dark, LIKE THE WITHERING VAIN." "IT never really had a chance." "I NEVER THINK I BELIEVED...I believed I could get better with you." "For you TO go and take this and smash it apart." "To wind up back at...I'M back at the start." (this is a guess) "HAVE you got anything left to show?" The meaning behind this song...is so out there and the song jumps around so much that I just don't know. The begining line though, sounds like doing heroin. "The more that we take, the paler we get. I can't remember what it is, we tried to forget." People take heroin and or drugs, to get rid of their shitty life. The song might be about Trent going away from drugs, confiding in a female to make things better, that not working out, and him returning to drugs. | |

| while some people may see this as an obvious song about a relationship between 2 people, i think it's more specifically about trent and the founding members of NIN. even though they had adoring fans their friendships were so strained that they couldn’t take it any more and parted ways. (But underneath we're not so tough, And love is not enough) also, trent shows how hard it was for him to get back into writing after his battle with addiction. (I've gone all this fucking way, To wind up back at, back at the start...) thankfully this album shows that he's finally made a complete turn around … and creating amazing music once more :) | |

| I think it means no matter how much you love someone with problems you love them and want them to get better THEY are the only ones who can start changing for themselves. Sad but true, sometimes love is not enough. | |

| I read in an interview that Trent had been living together with his girlfriend for some time....but that they broke up....I guess that when u deicide to go and live together u really want to make something of the relationship...external factors can ruin a relationship, someone's past can be a problem....other people can make it difficult for you....when u start of together, u might think that u can handle all these things because u love each other...but time may prove differently. u can have all the love in the world to share with one another, then still....it can go awry... | |
