There's a Bob Marley song that goes "Mr. Brown is a clown who rides to town in a coffin." i know O.A.R. is heavily influenced by reggae... anybody see a connection?

Shewy pretty much got it right- his name was Michael Brown and I think he died around 1997 or so. The conservative community interpritation is very nice, though.

The song is written about not political issues of any kind really, but like trippinbtm said, hypocracy. but its defintiley not written about their friend Michael. On Live at Madison Square Garden, Marc specifically says at the intro to this song that they've been playing music for 10 years now, starting out in a basement with just a few people watching. Michael was one of their friends who often watched them play their songs, and About Mr. Brown was his favorite song. so to all of you who are saying they wrote it for him, you're totally wrong. its just dedicated to Michael because it was his favorite song.

About Mr. Brown is DEDICATED to one of the band's friends that passed away. This was his favorite song. No, his last name was not Brown. He just liked it a lot.

I think it's about hypocracy more than just conservatives. Like, Mr Brown tries to set up laws for his daughter, but she disobeys and does her thing. He disapproves of what his brother did, so he chases him out...but man, it's his brother, you can't turn your back on him like that. It pisses his bro off, who chases him with a knife, angry and rejected, and maybe vengeful of his brother's hypocricy. And then, Mr Brown is asked what he does when no one's looking at him, when the parade is canceled. He wants the show to go his way, but it never can, because we all have our own lives to lead, and Mr Brown isn't perfect either. Yet he tries to act high and mighty, putting his will on others.

Dukedude, you are as bad as wheels is. Wheels is wrong. Go listen to the version of it on 34th and 8th (this quote is actually located at the end of Dareh Meyod): "This next song right here is, and always will be for our good friend Micheal. You know we miss him, and you know we love him, and if you guys are real loud, micheal will come from the heavens above and relax with us. This is his song." By all accounts, the members of O.A.R. don't like writing political songs, and avoid it with only a couple of major exceptions, 52-50 and arguably Mr. Moon being the biggest. This song isn't political like how wheels broke it down. it's not some big liberal rant. oldmantime1189 has it as close as it can be summed up.

haha - Dude, you're saying that the song was written about a person who wouldn't sell cigaretts to them. Seeing a metaphor here? Maybe, after trying to buy them, and not being able to, they take a step back. Look at the bigger picture. You have these kids, young repressed, 'rebels' that want no laws and are anti-rules and stuff. This store clerk is just another person who is enforcing rules, the rules that they want to go without. I agree with the intelligent statements, above. From Wheeler and from Trippinbtm. The inspiration may have come from this incident with the store clerk, but no doubt it's about something MUCH bigger. Clearly. Like how big and mighty is this guy (store clerk, father, government) setting rules for us? How perfect is he? He isn't perfect. So actually, saying "YOU ARE ALL WRONG..." shows you clearly can't make a simple connection with the above statements from Wheeler and the like and your own thoughts.

I think this song was written about one of the band's friends who passed away. Not sure on this one though but i think that may be what it said in the booklet for any time now

I don't know why but I think this song is about a transient...a bum. They're all so generalized these days, it's like they don't have identities, so it's all Mr. Smith, or Mr. Brown, or that bum, you know? I think the singer is talking to one of these bums, and he's like, hey do you remember your family? Do you remember when you had an identity, and you had brothers, sisters, a mother, daughters, whatever. Do you know what these people are up to these days? You try and tell me about all this stuff, but "what can you say about tomorrow? what can you tell me about my life?" The more I listen to this song, that's what I get out of it...just try listening to it with that perspective and see what you think.

this song reminds me of my father...like wheels said personification for the conservative community, except i think it is more of a "fuck you", or a "why don't you give it up/understand" to anyone who has tryed to control you in your life

YOUR ALL WRONG.....ITS DEDICATED TO THEIR CLOSE FRIEND MICHEAL....AND its written about a convienence store clerk who wouldnt sell them cigarettes. "This song is and always will be for a good man, Mike. We miss him and we love him and this one is his forever." Mike's favorite song was About Mr. Brown, the song is not about him.
