Are you serious? This song is obviously about much more than using "great songs in commercials".

the song was written in 1989 and it is about the schlock rock hair metal that was clogging the airwaves. It can also be compared to the music of today. emo crybabies are the new musical whores with tears in their eyes.

i think the meaning of this song is about how meaningless music is becoming today, and how the goal of being a musician is to sell out. The begining explains how some song writers have to make up these fake problems and storys just to sell their music, " life is so boring project theirs onto yours ". but i think thats generally what the song means ...feel free to debate!

But I would have to agree with you to a certain degree on the meaning.

modern culture sucks; the media advertises too much shit and the real bands with songs that ever meant anything are being shoved aside to make way for bands that are only playing for the sake of playing with no meaningful mesagesbehind their music, besides the promotion os pepsi, etc. How sad.

this song isn't just about music "back then" because it can hold true now, and not only for fake pre-packaged generalized out-of-the-factory music, it is also talking about the consumation of such in every aspect of life, like having a "window for your tomb" because its unecessary yet we still want it.
