I know it was written well beforehand, but this song describes NJ hardcore kids perfectly. They beat the crap out of anyone who doesn't have the "label". As for the original intent, yeah, life sucks in a lot of places. I was fortunate enough to move out of one. Op Ivy was such a great band. It's a shame Rancid can't be even half the band Op Ivy was

It's about people hell bent on labeling themselves so they can fit into a crowd or scene. Then that crowd gets all self righteous and thinks they're better than people and stuff. But how catchy is this song? Gah, it gets caught in my head like crazy, especially, of course "No" "No More" "No" "Bad town" "No more bad town..." Ahh so awesome.

this song is clearly about the "dirty south" rap trend happening 15 years after the song was released in 1989. those scenie tv gangstas. "knee jerk" refers to a gunshot, and "why speak out when you could be silenced" is about being shot, more mtv gangcore stuff. "down here the kids grow up faster" is about incest. so now that i've completely mocked this whole thread and how people think "down here" refers to them in whatever cali location they rep, i'm done.

I live in Berkeley Ca where Op Ivy is from. I think this song was written about the sheep we refer to as punk kids who all hang out at a local club called 924 Gilman, where they started playing.
