(then again I was probably taking the lyrics too literally)

I always assumed this was about a village plagued by disease, and the narrator being a healthy man watching the people around him die off, until eventually he too is infected.

I've spoken with a lot of people who claim that Opeth are not Death Metal, and I disagree with every one of them. Opeth have been very influenced by Death Metal and has always had a foot in that genre. Their past few albums (since Blackwater Park) have been very progressive. They didn't really become truly prog until they started collaborating with Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree. He has produced their recent albums, and his influence is clear. On the Lamentations DVD, Mikael Åkerfeldt said that the next album might be influenced by Black Metal. He said something about it being faster harder and darker or something like that. I'm looking forward to hearing the result.

It's a song pointing out all of the problems and corruption in humanity/society.

Kick ass tab, works perfectly to my liking, im a bit iffy on the slap part too, i think he just kinda improvises. i could probably play it a lot better if i could slap in the first place :/

I think 6th_sadistic_sniper could be right about the meaning. It makes perfect sense. The whole village/epidemy stuff could very well be a metaphore on society's plague. It is an awesome song, the ending is monumental. ...And Opeth is death metal... definetely. The growling, the guitar and drum technics... this is death metal. Death metal doesn't necessarily means «random heaviness at 290 bpm with omnipresent growling all the time». There are various brand of death metal one of which is called progressive death metal and that's exactly what Opeth do. And they're far from being the only band doing that kind of music and really far from being the most original or «the best» (if there is any), they are a very overrated band. That being said, it's a fantastic band that has a sound of their own and I can't help but love their music.

I agree with you, Herorgy. I've witnessed so many intense arguments about exactly what type of music an artist or band is. Hey, if it's good music, who gives a shit about what type of music it is? Besides, I think Opeth too versatile to be slapped with any label, whether it be "progressive death metal" or otherwise. So what kind of band is Opeth?? They're an AWESOME band! That classification alone is good enough for me!

They did take it from the band Blackwater Park. Opeth is actually considered Progressive Death Metal as odd as it sounds.

Necroth-I've also heard the black metal rumor. If that's true...I really think Opeth could pull off being the best band in two genres.
