It seems to me like they're telling the kid to forget the idea of being a fireman and keep painting. It's like they know what it means to be a fireman, the kid certainly doesn't, and are telling him that it would be better to paint.

this song is about keeping yourself focused and not dwelling on fantasies...mr. merriweather goes in search of something that doesn't exist, and the kid wants to be a fireman (an exciting, honorable job) but has to keep painting (a drab, boring, and repetitive job)

It about when parents select fore them what the kidīs should do but they want to do other things but are forced to do it theyr way.
