| i think its acctually about the singers best friend geting involved in a serious accident (or possibly drugs overdose) and being permantly brain damaged to the point of becomming a vegtable, this is not a coma, hes awake, theres just no concious mind inside (ie hollow) people in this condition just stair into space all the time ("sits with blank expresions") "I sit now with his hand in mine But I know he can't feel... " people in these vegatble like states cant feel anything, they are basicly cut off from the real world completely. Some speculate that the person is acctually still concious within there own mind, but unable to interact with the outside world in anyway (a link there to "i want to come in after you") its a very sad condition to be in, both for the family + friends and the possibly still concious person trapped in there own mind :( very good song tho | |

| anyway, everyone steals ideas and licks now and again, even randy rhoads stole, just listen to diary of a madman. nothing wrong with it as long as it isnt the sort of mindless thing some of the latest mainstream grunge acts do, blatantly ripping off other people. point is, this song fucking rules \m/ | |

| Yes, we seemed like 'bothers'. It's pretty obvious what it's about. He is helpless because his best friend is now braindead, but i don't think he's in a coma. I think he's suffered brain damage or something and can't do anything. He's now alone, and his friend, his head is 'hollow'. | |

| "and rebirth, i can go one better. i liked the four horsemen more when it was called 'Mechanix' and performed by Megadeth. theres a difference, this is simply a song with a similar subject, whereas metallica actually stole the music." Kind of hard to steal the music when Four Horsemen was half written by the same person that wrote Mechanix, and Four Horsemen came out first ; ). Nice try though. | |

| he does say 'mad at god' and really that would be unjustified if it were a drug overdose... surely? and rebirth, i can go one better. i liked the four horsemen more when it was called 'Mechanix' and performed by Megadeth. theres a difference, this is simply a song with a similar subject, whereas metallica actually stole the music. hostility aside, i recon the line where Phil sings 'It's as if he were dead' sounds like elvis costello, its pretty cool. | |

| but then again, "the four horsemen" is technically and lyrically way superior to "the mechanix". An anyways, megadeth proceeded to steal a riff from "leper messiah" in their song "area 51" but dont quote, i'm just saying what i've read, i hope i'm wrong, but metallica really are better than megadeth | |

| i was merely stating that even thought the lyric matter in this song reminds rebirth of a metallica song, even metallica steal shit. and i wasnt looking for a comparison to megadeth and metallica, i was looking for some opinions on the meaning of this song. peace out. | |

| I actually think Phil might've wrote this for anyone who had lost a friend, not because he lost one. | |
