Porch by Pearl Jam

This song is fairly easy to play.
Jeff Ament plays it on a 5 string but its very to play on 4 string

The begining is all guitar then the bass slowly makes its way into the song.

intro

do each note 5 x's
g----------------------------|------------------------
d----------------------------|------------------------
a----------------------------|------------------------
e---3--5--6--5--3--5--6-|------8----------------

Later on in the song the notes are the same but just played at different
times.

Verse
g-------------------------------------------
d--7-7-7-7-------------------------------
a-----------10-10-10-10--9--7-------
e-------------------------------------8----

This is a great song. Its fast but EASY

well, Il think this song could mean lots of things - and abortion is a pretty good idea. All the "there ain't gonna be any middle any more", which says "you have to make a choice". And the "daily minefield, which reminds you of how hard it is. Well, it could mean everything, but don't forget that it is a FUCKING great song. So much power and so much honesty. Beautiful.

I don't think this was a prochoice song at all. I agree with many here that Eddie did it because it was on MTV and millions were probably watching so what better way to do it? I think the song is about a relationship - which I think is aneglectful relationship. "And the cross I'm bearing home Ain't indicative of my place" That line to me explains a relationship where an individual is bounded to one place with no purpose and the line where it saids "would you hit me?" sounds like a relationship that has come to such a place where the person is questioning the other's intention and love. And there is an indication to leave and trying to convey the emotions to the other person which I think is explained in the last part of the song. "Hear my name, take a good look This could be the day Hold my hand, lie beside me I just need to say I could not take a-just one day I know when I would not ever touch you Hold you...feel you...ever hold...never again..." Those lyrics totally does not explain abortion. The last part of the lyrics seems to be what people pay attention to most but the other parts don't make sense if its about abortion.

because Vedder is atheist it makes big sense it's about pro-choice. And the cross I'm bearing home Ain't indicative of my place it's pretty obvious

I know this song is very old and this is the newest comment since last year. Anyway, coming from what eddie said at SNL and the acoustic version, I think the song is about abortion. A woman's pro-choice and her right to choose. What is the biggest choice a woman has now. Women can already vote and have equal rights with men, what else? The only thing left is abortion.

For me, this song is about an average one-of-millions guy, living his life, trying to reach the american dream. One day he "wakes up" and realizes how messed up this world really is: Fast-paced life, working your ass of just to get by, trying to reach your dreams just to finally realize it is not what you wanted/needed after all. At the same time, losing contact to people around you who you love and thus losing the very purpose of life. Now this guy realizes that and starts to appreciate his life, seeing that it makes no sense to chase your dreams in the future, when there are so many things you can enjoy right now, and more importantly, because you never know if you will live to see the sun rise tomorrow. So this guy urges the people around him (say, his wife) to appreciate all the beauty of life as well, and enjoy it while they can, because if you hold somebody's hand or touch them, you never know if it is not the last time ever. The message is to enjoy life and tell people around you that you love them, because we often think it is obvious, but if something unexpected happens, we might regret not expressing what we felt for the rest of our lifes. This is of course only how this song works for me personally, and if you guys feel different about it, it is just great because it proves once again what a brilliant band Pearl Jam really is. For me this is probably the best one from the whole Ten album, it just has it all.. :) Enjoy!

no way is it about abortion! while eddie wrote pro choice on his arm and altered a line in a performance, the songs not about abortion. also doubtful its about a relationship. i think that the "all the bills go by and..." stanza mentions how for a while he was struggling with a shitty job and spending all his spare time making music with bad radio before he joined pearl jam and it sucked. why is every almost every good song with ambiguous assumed to be about a fucking girl or break up??

This song is actually a pro-choice anthem by Pearl Jam...it's tough to see that meaning in the song, but in their unplugged performance on MTV, Eddie stood on his stool and wrote "pro-choice" on his arm during the instrumental part...also, on an appearance on Saturday Night Live, Eddie sand the lyrics "a woman her every right...to choose...to choose...to choose...for herself".

I believe everyone is correct. If you think about the words you can tell that it might be about a woman who husband/boyfriend has left her and she is pregnant. I think the abortion thought comes into the picture because she is unable to afford the child. I could be wrong but after hearing the song seeing the unplugged version and reading everyones thought it just makes sense to me.

I'm pretty sure the Prochoice thing was just a publicity stunt. I can't see it, the lyrics don't fit at all. If I had to say it was about pro choice/ pro life, it might be about relating a relationship to saying, "once you get this abortion it can't be undone", and comparing it to a ruined relationship. But that would be more Pro Life

This is a love song, written about breaking up and having to deal with never seeing the person again.
