the first time i ever trusted an adult i was in a girls home scratching my name into a bunk. a staff woman came busting in and caught me in the act. She sung this song, revising it for the occasion. "She scratches a letter, into a bunk, made of wood.." this wasn't a hard core insititution like in the song, however this woman risked her job by telling me when they were going to haul me off to a lockdown and helped me run from the girls home.

Whoa so no one's said what they think of this song? Well, I'm not gonna say what I think it means... but I'll say that I love this song. This whole album is really really good.

This song is about a loved one dying. Ive got a load of Pearl jam bootlegs, before he sings it he dedicated it to Kurt Cobain, when Kurt took the overdose in Rome.

eddie read an article about a girl who was instituionalized by her mother for smoking pot, the inspiration for the song.

i agree this song kicks ass! but i always thought it was just about some guy who got drunk n wound up getting into a fight with his wife or girlfriend and maybe wound up hitting her so she was leaving and he was trying to get her to stay.

I'm probably wrong, but it seems like it could be connected to the song Blood (track 7). "Once fastened, servile, now your getting sharp" about a syringe and then "Suck...blood..." later on. Maybe he's drawing a connection to the band being 'abused' by the media.

Another stroke of genius from Pearl Jam. Her parents have put her in this place because they are not willing to take responsibility upon themselves for the child they have raised. Hopefully, through Eddie Vedder's lyrics, people who hear this song will mature into better parents. Songs like "Why Go" are among the many excellent Pearl Jam songs that entertain us while teaching us a lesson. Art of the highest order.

Crimson, why dont you become a rock star. There are people that are willing to pay you tons of money for your apparent bipolarity. i'm not being sarcastic, but serious. many performers are bipolar. unfortunately, many bipolars become medicated for the sake of those around them - i guess your choice is to medicate so people can tolerate you. which sucks. but thats life i guess.

Only Eddie Vedder could write a song about his truck and make it kick ass...

Funny, I've been on a mental ward in the Army, about 6 months after signing up, for telling my platoon Sgt. I was thinking about killing him. When I got to the hospital the Major there said "You can't be in the Army anymore." The only words I ever heard her say. Two months later, I got discharged for "Honorable/Medical" reasons. Doesn't relate to this song, but just wanted to share another "nut house" story from different place.
