"Indifference"
by Pearl Jam from the album "Vs."
Tabbed by Dave Miller (dwm3@po.cwru.edu)
This is a nice melodic little song. It's very easy
to play (and very easy to tab, I might add). I'm not
sure of the correct notation but the "5|6" notation
in the tab represents lightly pressing on the string
above the line to separate the 5th and 6th frets.
...just like when tuning. It's a neat little sound
that comes in very handy for Mr. Ament in this
song.
Verse
||-------5|6-----------------7|8--------------
||*------------5|6-----------------7|8--------
||*---7------------------5--------------------
||--7-----------------5-----------------------
I will light the match...
Chorus
||--------5|6--------------7|8---------------5|6------------5|6
||*------------5|6--------------7|8-------------5|6-------------5|6
||*----7----------------5-----------------7--------------7------
||--7----------------5-----------------7---------------7---------
How much difference...

| Fleaaaaa, I really loved Binaural, (I think it tops Yield, actually), & Riot Act was a big disappointment for me. It has its moments, but some of the stuff sounds kind of tired to me. Then again, the songs are pretty cool live..maybe I just didn't like the recording style? eh, how much difference does it make | |

| I've been trying to analyse this song as stimulus material for a drama performance at school. This is what i've come up with. Losing a loved one is hard. But suiciding just because this person isn't there isn't the right thing to do. How much difference does it make to lose the person you love? Suicide is not the way to find out. braving through it, one step at a time is. Losing a loved one, accepting that they are not coming back is the hardest thing you can ever do. once you have experienced that everything else is easy. Even though you don't have the will to live anymore, you might live like a zombie (Arms outstreched), but it is better than death. Perhaps the pain of living every day without this person is the punches of life that you hate. but you take it untill you die, because you don't want to be weak. I can't really make sense of it right now, it's very confusing. | |

| Yadkci, i am sorry, but i believe that your line of thought is completelly wrong... It makes a hell of a diference, what doesn't make difference is your life, who cares if you live or die, if you are hapy or not?? Nobody | |

| I think this is simply a rebelious song, saying I will do what I want and live my life the way I want. How much difference will it make to you? | |

| The song captures the feeling of greatness, how a person can get through his days with a head always held high. To me it is actually the opposite of what everybody thinks of Vedder's mood... He is absolutly not depressed! More like teaching his way of facing the world, with indifference when he has to!! | |

| I have to agree with Real that this song is actually pretty optimistic. I think his stubbornness is pretty much going with what a lot of this album is speaking to - fighting against terrible things that are always going to occur in the world (animal, daughter, rearviewmirror, etc.). Even though one person fighting might not make much of a difference, that's not going to back him down. | |

| i think its about a guy stuck in a relationship with someone he loves but things are driving them apart he knows he has to end it but cant.. although you guys explanations are cool can't stand all this emphasis on pain though... i think a guy as smart as eddie vedder is smart enough not to write about how he wallows in his own pain constantly... | |

| I think it's about losing love. Also about how your live is changed when there isn't anybody in your life anymore. I was able to download a video file of Eddie and Ben Harper playing this song together. It's incredible. | |

| To me the song conveys a kind of pasive-aggresive rage. Maybe it's just the way Eddie sings the song, but he really seems to make good choices with his voice to show the message. | |

| It's one of their most beautiful songs I think, every record seems to offer at least one new particularly beautiful pearl jam song, the most beautiful imo: Ten : Black, ocean, release Vs: Indifference, rearview mirror, daughter Vitalogy : Better man, nothing man, immortality No code : Present tense, red mosquito, around the bend Yield : In hiding, given to fly, wishlist Binaural : Parting ways, sleight of hand Riot act : All or none, love boat captain, I am mine, Thumbing my way Should help any newbies looking for gorgeous pearl jam fans. What does everyone think of riot act? I think its good, but I'm a bit disapointed because I thought binaural was really good (although If I'd heard yield before I might have been disapointed with that). | |

| hmm i wouldn't know exactly what's it about but feels like someone who is in a lot of emotional pain and thinking bout some suicide action or what will be a substitute for the pain it is feeling. Could as well be on automutilating. Seeking physical pain for getting your mind of emotional pain. | |

| This song is purely about endurance. If you brake up with someone you MUST move on you cant let it get to you. And if it does don't let it stain your life. LIVE your life and move on! " I am mine " | |

| I think it's about being depressed and angry at the same time. "I will hold the candle till it burns up my arm Oh, I'll keep takin' punches until their will grows tired Oh, I will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind" sounds like he feels he can take on the world because his anger is so great and nothing can hurt him more than it already has. But then he asks "How much difference does it make?", pointing out the futility of it. The only thing he vaues is revenge against the whole world, but he knows it has no value. | |
