| the song to me is about taking a look at the world from a safe place. the world seems more peaceful when you see it from a distance. just relaxing and enjoying life, or taking time out to just relax a bit, and enjoy the company around you. you can see what a good person you are if you give yourself a chance. | |

| I do not think this song is about drugs.... it is too wise and upbeat to be about drugs... Honestly I think it is Eddie telling the media that it doesnt matter what they think, eddie is in his tree and doesnt care....It has the Tribal rhythm that no code was known for.... he's changed so much that he waves to all his friends but they dont notice him.... look at how much of a change No Code was Pearl jam was able to shed most of their fair-weather "friends" with No Code.... I love this song... | |

| This Person is or was on crack for a long time, and in that time he lost his innocence and found it later by reviving his drug use, but not crack Mary jane later found his innocence, hence the trees. | |

| I don't think this song has to do with drugs as Regos the Sane has said. I feel it has to pertain to finding peace away from other pressures. The act of climbing a tree, which most have sometime done, is a tranquil experience and has a lot of representations behind it. | |

| This song is about that girl who lived in the tree--Julia Rainbow something or other, I forget her name. Anyway, she was big in the news for a bit. | |

| I see it as a metaphor of some sort...not sure exactly...but it's Eddie's way of confronting loneliness, abandonement, isolation, etc. Is it just me or is No Code one of the most underrated albums of all time??! | |

| Compare this song to Deep and Given To Fly. Both of them refer to drug abuse by people looking down at the world, and Given to Fly specifically talks about a tree. Also look at lines like "I'm trading stories with the leaves" and "I'm so high the sky I scrape". It seems impossible that this song could not be referring to drugs. | |

| this song has some different levels of meaning 1 hes just stoned "i'm so high i hold this one breath deep within my chest" 2 hes grown in a way that people dont notice/understand "i wave to all my friends, they dont seem to notice me" " "knowledge is a tree. its growing up just like me" 3 hes somehow regressed "i caught a glimpse of my innocense, i got my innocense, still got it" "i go back to my nest, sleep in innocense" 4 hes broken free of everyday constraints and has found some peace "newspapers matter not to me. no more crowbars to my head. im trading stories with the leaves instead" personally, i think the song is about some expereince that encompassed all of those things for eddie | |

| I agree completely with all of you who think this is PJ's most under-rated album. It's probably my favorite one and this is my favorite PJ song of all-time. Although I think it's about how Eddie was dealing with all of the problems that come with fame and success, it has a lot of personal meaning for me, too. | |

| I Agree with PJ10. I think it is about him metaphorically looking down on the world and how he is percieved and treated. As for DeathRockBoy's statement, I agree it is the most underrated album. I feel it is arguably their best. | |

| I think that this song and this album are mainly about simplicity and the beauty of nature. The narrator likes the view from being in hte tree, and now that he is up there he is made happier and happier at his distance from "society" and his nearness to that which is real and beautiful...Nature While I dont think that this song is drug inspired, I do get reminded of my younger, "more carefree" days when I hear it. A friend of mine who had a party house that was full everynight would sometimes take large quantities of acid and go down to the park down the road and climb this huge pine tree. We would do this in the summer or the winter, dusk or dawn. I am terribly afraid of heights but would find myself 30 feet off the ground in this big tree, feeling safe, watching cars go by, watching people walk their dogs and shovel their sidewalks....it was very peaceful up there and we would sway in the breeze for hours and not even speak. That is what this song means to me. | |

| damn smily3t85, you just recently bought this album? This is an imperitive inclusion to anyones album collection who grew up in the 90s. I love this song. This is about letting go, coming into your own and being able to spot the disillusionment in those still in it. | |

| If you don't have a live version of this song, get one. The guitar is so much clearer, it sounds incredible and it's a great contrast to Eddie's voice. The album version just doesn't come close. | |
