| This song is about a girl Eddie Vedder knows. It works in tandem with the song "Why Go". This girl was living in a very opressive family. When she was caught smoking weed, they put her in a mental institution. Hence "Why Go". Leash is a reaction to how she was treated after she got out of the institution. She was forced to be home by 7 every night, and could not date. This song is Eddie calling to people like her parents to "drop the leash". GREAT song | |

| I believe this song is about Teenagers, telling them to unite, and be friends and then it turns and tells the Parents and Government and everyone like that to drop the leash and let them live and enjoy their youth. | |

| its basically a "FUCK YOU" song about a guy who is with a controlling gf or whatever and we use leashes on dogs and other domesticated animals to controll them so "DROP THE LEASH! DROP THE LEASH! GET OUT OF MY FUCKING FACE" is him saying "stop fucking controlling me life! stop fucking controlling my life and get the hell away!" this is a great song that if your just full of energy and you need to release it to just crank up the volume all the way and just fucking yell the chorus "DROP THE LEASH DROP THE LEASH! GET OUT OF MY FUCKING FACE!!!!!!!" | |

| think this song is about a teenage pregnancy and a shotgun wedding. Plus, the control parents and adults want to have over their kids. These lines make me think this: Young lover I stand...I proved to be a man. Getting a girl pregnant proves his virility, thus proving he is a man. Take my fucking hand, it was their idea... Taking her hand in marriage, the use of the fuck showin it is not an act he wants to do, but 'It was their idea', meaning their parents idea. Thats my interpretation, anyway. | |

| No no no no no.... Before I get into the why, let me just say that of all the Pearl Jam songs, this one moves me more than any other. The anger and passion are great, especially in the first verse. Okay, onto the analysis -- The first verse is special because it unites the trouble souls, and even though they don't know where they are going, at least they are together. This is a beautiful sentiment, by the way. Verse #2 gets more personal as Ed describes a conversation he had with his cad of a father, in which he reveals to Ed that it was their (friends) idea to go out with Ms. Vedder...she gets pregnant as a result and ol' Dad is gone once he finds out. He further divulges his boorishness when he tells young Ed to take his "fucking hand" and curtly (and defensively) reasserts that it was THEIR idea, to prove he was a man. This sudden change of heart and growth of conscience on ol' cad-dad's part infuriates Ed, leaving him to vent. In spite of dad's advances, Ed wants nothing to do with him, let alone a relationship. To this Ed responds, "drop the leash, get out of my fucking face. We can find our own way, we will find meaning for our lives outside of you, and you just use us to live vicariously through us (the 'delight in our youth' bit)" There...how's that? | |

| PJ vs. the media...I think this one is Eddie offering a compromise to the media, to "make amends"..."we" is PJ; they are young, they'll find their place...however, Ed still wants the media to back off ("outta my FUCKIN' FACE") | |

| Vozzy...I'm not sure where you got all that from, but it's my understanding that Ed never met his father. Or at least didn't know who his father was until after the guy died. Hence, the first verse of "Alive." Anyway, this is one of my favorite PJ songs and I agree with the others who said it's teenage rant music. And also, I think Eddie's talking to the fans who, once they hit it big, started to look up to him - "I am lost. I'm no guide, but I'm by your side. I am right by your side." | |

| While I hate to turn a lot of songs into relating to relationships, this song can be applied in that respect. Drop the leash, he's talking about a girl who has hurt him but still leads him around. In essence she wants to 'have her cake and eat it too' but Eddie just says, "Drop the Leash, get out of my fucking face" I don't want anything to do with you. Troubled Souls unite, we got ourselves tonight can be a shout to his friends or other people who are going through the same thing meaning. Come on, lets lean on each other, we won't have to worry about that. That's where "I'm am lost, I am no guide, but i'm right by your side." I think its saying 'hey we are in the same boat and I sure as hell don't know where to go from here but I'm here for you nonetheless.' | |

| Like someone said earlier this song is about the same girl Eddie Vedder is talking about in Why Go. This is a quote from Eddie-- "She was stuck in a home because she was, like, caught smoking pot or something...This is what they do in Chicago, in the suburbs...If the kid has any resilience at all they'll go 'Fuck you, there's nothing wrong with me. My parents are fucking freaks. My mom's a fucking paranoid freak, she gets home from work and sits and watches TV, gets all this information 'bout teenagers from Hard Copy and then takes it out on me. I'm a pretty good fucking kid.' This girl Heather was in for two years, two fucking years, and she's one of the smartest kids I knew. Now, Heather finally gets out, but her mom's still doing the same fucking thing, threatening her with putting her back in the hospital. I mean, this girl was 15, 16 years old, she couldn't be on the phone after 8:00 at night. She couldn't go out, she couldn't spend the night at anyone's house, she couldn't do anything. It was after talking to her again one day that I wrote the song in the car. "Drop the leash" you know? "Get out of my fucking face." | |

| I agree with thenarrarator. This song is about being a teenager. Somethings just piss you off, and you just want everyone to get out of your face. You want to unite with all the other depressed teens, and talk about shit. I dunno. I listen to it everytime I'm really pissed at my parents, or whoever. Really awesome song. | |

| I totally agree with aldeayeah. That line rocks and so does "we will find a way". Not sure about "delight in our youth". Is he saying we should enjoy being young, or that society should "drop the leash" and stop trying to influence the young? BTW fleaaaaaa I've always interpreted that line as meaning he got a girl pregnant as a teenager, but the rape thing makes sense as well. Either way, it's about destructive sex. | |
